What does America think about the UK?

Recommended Posts

Ok so the POTUS is visiting the UK at the moment, he described the relationship between the US and the UK as 'the essential relationship' Maggie Thatcher and Ronald Regan described it as the 'special relationship' but what do you as an American think about the UK and the US and the relationship?
Personally I don't think that there is a 'special or essential relationship' and doubt that there ever has been. I think that to the the US we're a bit of a has been power and at times a pain in the bum who have a over inflated opinion of ourselves and I'm pretty sure that the current POTUS would rather be friends with the French than us.
Also joking stereotypes of bad food and bad teeth aside how do you Americans view Brits in general? Be honest.

"What does America think about the UK?"

Other than a few cultural elements (Beatles, Monty Python, Harry Potter, Top Gear) I pretty much don't think about the UK at all on a daily basis.

That's not good or bad; it's indifferent.

You can't ask a question like that on a skydiving forum, where people like Andy Copland fly the flag for the UK:)

I find the following funny about many Americans that I work with over here.

1) High level of interest in the Royals
2) How many trace their lineage, back to specific towns or counties in the UK.
3) When they ask if you know "Jack from London"?

As a broad generalisation though, most Americans seem to "like" the Brits, and among the redneck tribes the UK appears to be one of the only other countries that is accepted as being "free world".

Exactly. The world doesn't revolve around the union jack anymore, and the UK is not nearly as important as the OP thinks it is.

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

I didn't express an opinion on the importance or otherwise of the UK, I gave an opinion on how I view the relationship between two countries. But good to know that there is a mind reader in the house :S.

those are jokes?

Let's see... you don't have the right to defend yourself in your own homes from an attacker. The pro-gun crowd used to joke about "knife crime" and "knife confiscation" as something that followed disarming of the people, but then it happened in the UK (well, at least the articles about knife crime started popping up).

I see Brits as a society that is further down the road than we are. I'm hoping we can look at how things have gone over there and avoid the British mistakes that led to the bad things, and mimic the decisions that led to the good things.

I think that it's a pretty good example of how environment changes what you think is right. After all, there is a common language (well, sort of), and many common cultural elements and history.

But the people in the two countries are different, and full of people who can't see how one can deal with what's in the other country.

Maybe over time people are adaptable, but in the short run they sure like to bitch a lot :)

Ugh, this again. Yes, we do. Moreover, there's no duty to retreat as some American States require - a lethal pre-emptive strike against an unarmed intruder can be perfectly legal here.

But let's not let the thread go off track. :)

After visiting last year I kept thinking "what a great country this was once upon a time." Sadly, I see the U.S. in the same decline, for the same reasons.

Interesting, what was it that made you think that it was no longer a great country?

Sorry, couldnt help myself

I view the Brits as much the same as I do our own

Good, hard working people who try to make a living in the political and economic climate they function under.

Of course threads about the politics vs the people would be much different IMO. Just as it would be in the case of the US.

My brother lived over there for about 7 years. He liked it but he missed many of the foods we have over here

I don't think about the "UK" at all.

On a personal level, though, I've met a ton of Brits and they don't stand out much vs people from the US or elsewhere. In short - I like most of them, most seem to be caring and want good things for their kids, and are nice to people that are nice to them.

"People" are people. "Countries" are another thing. In the end, people are what matter, the rest is inconsequential.

I think the royals are silly and I think the wigs in your courts are silly and your laws regarding firearms are absurd.

Other than that I think you guys rock :)
BTW, thats not to say that there isnt plenty of silliness right here in the States.
I could make a very long list.
