Obama: Americans must pay fair share to cut deficit

Ok, Mr. President, tell me how much you think a "fair share" is. I already pay >25% income tax, I also pay sales tax at the stores, fuel taxes at the pumps, etc. All totalled up I would estimate that more than 65% of what I spend each year goes directly or indirectly to pay taxes of some kind.
My business also pays taxes. When these taxes are raised I cannot afford to absorb them so I pass the extra expense on to my customers. How does making people, who are already stretched to the limit, pay even more help our economy?
Heres a tip: Cut expenses and implement a Welfare for Work program that is mandatory. Almost every person who collects welfare can do something even if it is stuffing envelopes at home, picking up trash, painting guardrails along the highways, etc. Every hour they work is an hour's pay we save. No, it is not slavery. Don't want to work? Fine. You get no money.
There are, of course, exceptions for those who are physically or mentally disabled to the point they cannot do anything.

I'm even more sick of hearing liberals use the "fair" word. At this point in time, it comes across as self entitled whining on their part.

The problem with suggesting anyone "pay their fair share" is the same problem with saying someone needs to "use some common sense." Neither of those directives actually mean anything.

What constitutes a "fair share" or "common sense" to anyone is just anything that they believe that they've bounced off of at least one other person over a beer or something that they wish everyone else believed too.

I heard Obama was doing such a poor job - that even Kenyans are claiming he was born in Hawaii.

LOL

I like Obama, but funny is funny.

yup... and everyone who voted for him will say "see how much better he was than the last guy" and everyone who didn't will say "your guy is the same as the last guy!". Someone will be on about "well it's Bush's fault", and of course, they'll all be right. At least partially.

Well, TARP added about $2,200 for everybody in the country, about 33% of which pay taxes, so I guess those of us who earn our living can start by all ponying up about $6.6k for Caesar.

every time I hear "fair share" wrt taxpayers, I always parse it as "from each according to their ability"

Well, that's hilarious.

I paid more income tax last year than GE did. My guess is they have a far greater ability to pay than I do.

Two points to make.
1) How did your taxes in years previous to 2010 compare to taxes GE paid to the US government?
2) If I knew I was going to have to pay 35% income tax I would do all i could to minimize (on paper) my income as well. I expect you would do the same.

Finally, an adult willing to tell people what they don't want to hear.

We have to cut spending. We have to increase taxes. Few people have the guts to admit this - because it's a very unpopular position no matter what side of the aisle you're on.

It seems you're implying you think GE should pay more... so you agree with me. You think they should pay their fair share... according to their ability.

How is that hilarious?

I don't see it unless you're assuming that I think it's currently this way. In which case you're mistaken.

I think that unless we greatly simplify the tax code it doesn't matter if we pass a "Buffett Rule" that puts an AMT on earners above a certain point. There will be loopholes to make that not happen.

Everyone should pay a little more. Everyone should have skin in the game. If you don't have a job, your skin in the game should be time. Go work a few hours a week for your welfare. Honestly disabled?? (not shopped doctors until you get the diagnosis you're looking for) get a pass.

No, we only need to cut spending. There is more than enough money to run the country in an effective manner and provide all the services we need. The government ha sproven time and again that when they raise taxes "to reduce the debt" the extra income is only spent on more pork.

1. I'm pretty sure that I have paid a higher percentage of my income in taxes than GE for many years.

2. How do you go about doing that?

Wealthy individuals who are avoiding the 50p income tax rate are to be targeted by 2,250 extra Government inspectors in a crackdown to be unveiled by Danny Alexander at the Liberal Democrat conference.

Mr Alexander, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, has said that one hundred of the new investigators would form an "affluence team" to crack down on the mega-rich – the 350,000 people in the UK whose personal wealth is more than £2.5m.

"We are keeping up the pressure on tax evasion and tax avoidance, on making sure that those with the broadest shoulders bear their fair share of the burden," he told the Independent on Sunday.

While he told the BBC: "There will be new campaigns launched to encourage people in particular sectors to pay their fair share, we'll be taking additional prosecutions against tax evasion where we identify that illegal activity, we'll be investigating when measures are set up that are designed to avoid tax and close loopholes if that is necessary."

The largest problem is that the people who are paying the MOST already have no belief that the extra taxes will go to reduce the ampunt owed.

It's like getting a second job to pay down debt but knowing your spouse who doesn't have a job will just spend the money rather than pay down the debt.

No "trust"

Until that chnages we are stuck, how do you change it? Find a leader more people trust. Who's that? Beats me.

1) Quade said he paid more income tax. Percentage of income was not mentioned.

2) If I were in that situation I would do the same thing GE did. I would have my accountant and tax lawyer find the best way.
