Accidentally shooting and killing your wife Same sort of question. Cute, but not related to the discussion that the other poster and I were having.... So questions about having a gun (and the dangers involved with that) are not relevant to a thread entitled "which makes you more safe: A restraining order, or a gun?" I see you subscribe to the MNealTX school of debate; argue yourself into a corner then attack. Good luck with that.

CameraNewbie 0 #85 November 8, 2011 Always get a restraining order first. While it might not physically protect you, it can at least keep you from getting harassed. What do protesters want? Dead cops! When do they want it? Every 2 weeks!

livendive 8 #87 November 9, 2011 It depends on how far away the threat is. A restraining order is better protection from someone currently a few miles away, a gun works better for someone currently a few feet away. Personally, I like having access to both.\ Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" (drink Mountain Dew)
DesertAttorney 0 #88 November 9, 2011 I keep a .25 ACP in my desk drawer for if/when someone gets past my receptionists and to my office door. Having received a death threat last week, I am of the mindset that it's better to take my chances with 12 jurors than to have 1 Police Officer deliver the news of my death to my wife... A restraining order is better protection from someone currently a few miles away, a gun works better for someone currently a few feet away. Personally, I like having access to both.\ Blues, Dave I would disagree. You don't need protection from someone a few miles away, you need protection from someone a few feet away. While a restraining order is great for telling someone they aren't welcome near you, it's not so great at actually doing that. "I'm sorry Ms. Crazy-as-hell Ex-Girlfriend, this piece of paper says you can't come within 100 yards of me, now please put down the knife and go away." Think that will work? Obviously, both is the correct choice, as a restraining order lets the other person know they are not welcome near you, and if you are not in immediate danger, the police can compel that person to leave. A gun, or any other weapon for that matter, is a tool to be used when your life or the life of another is in imminent danger - a situation in which a restraining order means absolutely nothing. livendive 8 #92 November 10, 2011 I have two kinds of rounds for my carry gun, and I refer to them as target rounds and "stop doing that" rounds. I think the distinction here is similar...a restraining order tells someone "stop doing that" from a distance. If they ignore that and come closer, a gun can be a bit more compelling. As you say, when my life is in imminent danger, a restraining order is worthless, kinda like my XD-40 when the crazy is miles away. The difference is distance, and the manner in which it compels someone to stop fucking with me...one threatens legal consequences, the other mortal. Blues, Dave "I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!"
