Is he? To be honest I thought my biggest problems were some moderate credit card debt and that muscle between my shoulder blades I've just pulled again. That little bastard usually takes a good four or five days to clear up, I'm not sure God can compete.

That's at least biblical correct. Satan killed 10 people (the kids of Job during a bet with Jehova) and God/JAWEH killed millions alone in the great flood. According to your holy book that is. So from an average human POV, Satan is the good guy in that book. Or at least the least evil guy.

Do you think it would have been just (if you lived back then) for you to have died in the flood?

Added: If God is in fact holy, then He must hate that which is unholy. If God is in fact just, then he must punish that which is unjust (sin). Question is: Which side are you on (rhetorical...we know already)? How are you going to account for your own lawlessness if you're planning to reject the ransom which was paid already on your behalf? I’d say (if you’re like how I was) you’ve got a huge problem. 10 out of 10 people die. The Bible says that when you die, you will face judgment. There won’t be any fence to sit on when that day comes. It will either be innocent or guilty.

Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down

Now we're talking....Crank it!

Here's the original with one of the best casts for a video I think I've ever seen...or even a movie for that matter.

That's a great song! Been one of my favorites of his since it came out.

No. Of course not.

(Just what effect were you expecting that question to have?)

If.

(Or, slightly less poetically, no.)

Ok..."If"...God does exist and you're judged when you die, will you be found innocent or guilty?

By the way, were you objecting to God (in general) or saying that if He is holy and just, that He shouldn't punish sin?

I rejected god because I couldn't square the idea of a good and all-powerful deity with a world in which little kids get cancer, and where earthquakes, floods, and other natural disasters kill thousands of innocent people, and leave countless others injured, homeless, and suffering. There is simply way too much misery and pain in this world, misery and pain that has nothing to do with human choices or actions, for me to believe in god.

The problem of evil isn't really an argument against the existence of god(s) it's an argument against the existence of a couple of specific gods. Nowhere in the job description it states that a god has to be good or even interested in humanity.

Yes, I agree. Go ahead and re-read my post. I put the important part in italics to help you out. And I wasn't making an argument against the existence of god. I wouldn't bother to get into an argument over a proposition for which there is no evidence one way or the other. I was simply answering the OP's question of why I became an atheist.

Of what?

Certainly right now I'm innocent of anything serious, and not just through technicalities.

I just don't get why you think that being holy would mean you can't be nice. It's a really sad way of looking at things.

Don't compare yourself to others. Compare yourself to God's standard. Your infractions may seem trivial to you until you consider against whom the crimes are really against. To an infinitely holy God, one lie is deserving of hell.

You mean like Him dying for those criminals who were still committing crimes against Him. That's pretty "nice."

That's stupid.

So now you're saying that god isn't just (by your bizarre baby-killing standards of justice). Huh. You could at least try and keep your story straight.

If that's the case, to an infinitely holy God, sending someone to a place of eternal torture, certainly should be punished with an eternity in hell. Actually sending people to hell would be about the only reason to be send to hell.

so that makes the existence of undeserved evil, (like a toddler dying of AIDS in some godforsaken desert while crows are picking his /her eyes out) a rather big problem.

Actually, God is good...perfectly good...all the time. Our problem is usually that we misunderstand what good is. Ultimately, it's based on His standard of righteousness and not our own.

God has been a big supporter of cruel and inhumane, note back to scriptures promoting the rape and pillaging of villages.

Wait, God is never wrong - therefore all those things are actually not inhumane and cruel at all. Either that or it's over-ruled because it's old testament. Got to love all these little 'outs' that have been developed to make God seem like a entity worth praising.
