I'm surprised it took this long

It's not so legally cut and dried. Notice that the suit is filed in Texas/ Texas may have laws that are a bit more beneficial to the plaintiffs.

I'd be interested in seeing how this works out. Assumption of risk, etc.

Yeah, I know.
I'm just sick of people filing a lawsuit whenever something bad happens. They want their millions of dollars and fuck anybody or anything that may suffer because of their lawsuit.
This will drive a lot of nails into the air race coffin regardless of how it turns out. Just defending against the suit will cost a small fortune.

The problem, though, is that the grave for the air race coffin was dug by a P-51 unlimited driving into stands at 400 mph. Who knows how much the air races could even survive THAT?

My wife is hotter than your wife.

If people would take the responsibility of accepting the risks of attending such an event and nobody filed a lawsuit, I would say it was very survivable.
Motorsports is inherently dangerous to all who attend. Driver, crew, spectator. When vehicles are pushed to their limits, which is the very basis of racing, parts fail and accidents happen. There is no if, only a when and how bad.
Hopefully the courts will recognize the assumed risk involved, learn how meticulous and detail oriented the crews of these machines are, and toss this rotten egg out with the trash.

Do these people honestly believe attending an air race is without risk? Bloody freakin' idiots :S

Well, we've long seen one part of Texas (East?) as a very popular court for shopping for large jury awards. Was that the reason here, or was the county chosen the one that the the victims lived in? Seems like this needs to be in Nevada.

So, if you were in a car accident, you wouldn't file a claim with your insurance company because you assumed the risk of driving?

Every one of the spectators that were injured and the families of those killed are entitled to compensation for the accident. It's a completely ignorant comment to simply state that they should suck it up and bear all of the responsibility for something that they had no control over just because you hate the word "lawsuit".
It's all been said before, no sense repeating it here.

I pay premiums for insurance.
No, I don't feel the families of those killed are entitled to compensation other than medical bills and funeral expenses.
You are absolutely right in one respect: They had no control over what happened. But the victims did. They chose to be there knowing full well that something like this could happen. It was very, very unlikely, but still possible. They controlled where they were that day, nobody else did. To expect someone to pay millions of dollars for a choice somebody else made is what is completely ignorant.

This is probably true, but $25.000.000 isn't compensation, it's an outrageous amount of money.

Speaking for Salerno's family, Buzbee said in a telephone interview that no amount of money could fix the "huge gaping hole ripped from their lives."

But they try their best to fill that hole with money anyway it seems. Apparently mourning doesn't have to stand in the way of the extremer forms of greed.

A Federal Looser Pays law would go a long way toward fixing this

if we falter and lose our freedoms,
it will be because we destroyed ourselves."
