the institute’s sources indicated that the blast occurred while rocket engineers were performing a volatile procedure with a missile engine.

Pfft. Reminds me of the good ole daze modifying Estes rocket motors to launch frogstronauts. Sometimes you just have to sacrifice a fingertip or two for good, clean fun.

The fourth USS Vincennes (CG-49) is a U.S. Navy Ticonderoga class Aegis guided missile cruiser. On July 3, 1988, the ship shot down Iran Air Flight 655 over the Persian Gulf, killing all 290 civilian passengers on board, including 38 non-Iranians and 66 children.

You left out...

According to Captain Rogers, there had earlier been an attack on the Vincennes by Iranian motor boats. Crucially, the Vincennes then misidentified the Iranian Airbus as an attacking F-14 Tomcat fighter. A radio warning had been sent to the aircraft on military wavelength

Reminds me of the PEPCON explosion in Nevada back in the 80s except it looks like they got off lighter in terms of damage but came out worse in terms of loss of life.

I wouldn't discount the accident theory. If you've ever worked around these people you would be surprised this kind of thing doesn't happen more often.

I don't loose any sleep over the prospect of Iranian rockets making it to my neighborhood.

Do you lose any sleep over the prospect of Iranian missiles making it to Israel, igniting retaliation, possibly nuclear, and starting WWIII?

An Iranian missile crossing the Israeli frontier could trigger retaliation, but the US might be able to head it off, the way the US did during Gulf War I when the Iraqis lobbed Scuds into Israel.

I don't see Israeli retaliation going nuke unless the Iranian attack is nuke; and even then, not necessarily so with certainty.

I don't see the WWIII scenario (even with Iranian/Israeli nuke/counter-nuke) happening since the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union. In a nutshell, both the Russians and the Chinese (especially Chinese) have too much progress to lose to risk it unless they feel their very national existence is threatened, WWII-style. I see them both sitting it out, then filling-in the various resulting vacuums.

attacking F-14 Tomcat fighter

Yes F14s are known for ground and sea attack!!!!

God I hate stupid people.

FUCKING READ SOMETHING

like what? F14a have been used for ground attacks. It's not really a strength but stupid would be ignoring an incoming F14 because "it's really better at shooting down airplanes."

WOW

Like i said go read something. Its a fighter jet it has the sid winder air to air, the Sparrow air to air, the phionex air to air and an m61 canon for dog fights.

The only reason your looking for an excuse for the murder of over 200 vacationing civilians is that there Iranian. I wish I could give you enough credit to call you a racists, but in your mind you are so used to bending truths and facts to fit your narrow fuck up view i just wish you thought more. If this would have happened to an American flight or an Israeli flight you would singeing a different tune.

I am done see you next time one of you is so far off the facts that it hurts my head.

How dare did Persians fly over the Persian Gulf its there fault.:S

I have it on good record that the Vincennes was cleaned at the end. Blood was paid by a few.
Not sure if it's ture or not....but the preson who told me had the right marks.

As for this little "OH SHIT!"
Rockets are a bitch! Looks as if they had a serious explosion due to anything. Could have been nothing could have been something.
Who knows.

No. Iranian's can't even fuel a rocket without blowing themselves up. I look forward to them playing with nuclear bombs;)

Oh yeah, just in case you didn't notice Israel is my neighborhood.

Yes, read something like this (from Globalsecurity.org):Despite its many upgrades over the years, from the F14A, to the F-14B, and finally the F-14D with its powerful F110-GE-400 engines and more sophisticated weaponry and surveillance equipment, it appeared the Tomcat's days were almost over. However, this state of uncertainty wouldn't last for long. Shortly following the Persian Gulf War, Navy leaders decided to devise removable bomb racks for the Tomcat's to allow them to carry MK-80 "dumb" bombs. The Tomcat's were also given the Low-Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) targeting system to allow for delivery of laser-guided bombs. With its new upgrades the Tomcat's were soon dubbed as the "Bombcats."

During the proceeding years the F-14s took on a new, more effective role as a fighter-bomber. In Operation Deliberate Force in Bosnia, the Tomcats delivered laser-guided bombs while other aircraft painted the targets with lasers. The Navy was credited with 30 percent of the kills against forces in Kosovo as a result of the bombing performance of the Tomcat. The F-14 also demonstrated its ground attack capabilities in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2002, VF-14 led the first long-range tactical air strike, flying more than 1,700 miles round trip to Mazar-e Sharif, destroying Taliban aircraft on the ground. During Operation Iraqi Freedom the Tomcats are living up to their 'Bombcat' nickname with their air-to-ground missions which continue to save the lives of coalition ground forces each day.

or this (from www.iiaf.net): Rumors had been going about that Iranian F-14As had been fitted with the Russian made engine and ejection seat and has the capability to launch air-to-surface anti-ship missiles.
You don't have to outrun the bear.

as usual, you're more emotional than rational on anything relating to Iran.

I didn't make any judgment on the event, just noted that your claim that an approaching F14 is of no concern is bullshit. While most of the retrofits for the F14 (US) came after this incident, that was driven by the US having other options. The Iranians did not, so their motivation to improvise is greater. That canon packs quite a punch as well.
