The Coming Accidental War with Iran

if a leader of a sovereign nation wants to lead his country, it's none of our business what he does and we certainly can't go around deposing leaders just because we don't agree with their style of leadership, period.

So if you were a citizen in North Korea, you wouldn't want someone to depose your leader so that you and all of your countrymen could live in freedom and prosperity like the rest of the world?

That wasn't his proposition. He's talking about "from the outside looking in"; while you're asking him about "from the inside looking out". Two very different things.

Israeli officials are stepping up their rhetoric, warning that another invasion of Gaza is just a matter of time.

Speaking as Israel launched two air strikes on militant targets in the strip, Israel’s top general, chief of staff Lieut Gen Benny Gantz, warned that cracks had emerged in Israel’s deterrence of militant groups and a second round of fighting was no longer a matter of choice for Israel.

“Such a round must be initiated by Israel and must be swift and painful. I do not advise Hamas to test our mettle.”

Militants launched at least four rockets at Israel yesterday after an Islamic Jihad gunman was killed and 10 other people injured in two Israeli air attacks on Tuesday night

forewarned is forearmed...

...and your forecasting is full of shit. Iran wouldn't dare blockade the strait. They would not have the support of OPEC and the US and other consumer nations would annihilate their navy in hours. It would be just another hiccup in the oil markets. And sort of actual war would be far less clean and clear.

Just another 'excuse' for gasoline producers in this country to raise prices at the pumps?

Even if they were to go in to Gaza what makes you think the IDF would be able to destroy Hamas this time where they haven't in the past. Also Hamas is only one factor what about Hezbollah? Do you think that Israel is about to re invade Lebanon? Dream on.

Um, your complaint should be "fucking CNN". I just copied their headlines. I agree that the bladed weapon they refer to being rattled is a sabre.

As much as i want to see all the camel fucking mullas hung and Iminneedofajacket shot....

We can't afford it! Man we be freaking broke! [:/]

Sure the US can afford it. BHO has just proposed raising the debt limit another $1.2 Trillion.
The battle-field is already set. Look at a map. US in Iraq. US in Afghanistan. US fleet in the Gulf. Remember the last time the Iranians mined the straits? It was the excuse Reagan was itching for. This has been coming for awhile. No big news flash here. The recent explosions in Iran are too precise to be simple accidents.;)

i don't know whether china will lend the us enough for another war when that war will also cut off china's own oil supply...

The Chinese ain't stupid. They just might join in, like they did in the Sudan.

Who knows? What rattles about inside BHO's head is up to very far ranging speculation. Remember "Wag the Dog"? I won't put anything past BHO's ambition.

It must be a fascinating fantasy world you live in. Someday a shrink or fiction author may ask you about it.

Here in the real world, back in 1987 and 1988 Iran used mines and tried to block the strait during the Iran-Iraq war. The US military destroyed all opposing forces that didn't turn tail and run, and then forced a cease-fire between Iran and Iraq. Operation Praying Mantis

Do you really think anything present day Iran uses to block the strait wouldn't be destroyed by the fifth fleet?
Russia doesn't think so - Russian military official: Iranian Navy no match for US battle group

you post this often, but apparently still have no idea how much the Chinese hold in US treasuries. Hint: it's a lot less than you think.

6) Its not the Iranian way of going about things, they prefer to use proxies.

7) Attacking Iran would unleash a terrorist campaign against the west which would be unprecedented in both scale and execution, and one which would be hard to fight.

As you note in 6, we've been at war with them for a long time already. Why not formalize it and just get it over with? An Iraq I style conflict would knock them down a peg or five. It would be better if this were done by the Saudis and company...their asses are the ones on the line along with the Israelis.

If "can't do" means ignoring genocide, tyranny and oppression, then you're correct - I can't do it. If it means turning a blind eye to massive suffering, I can't do it. If it means having no sympathy for people who are being wronged, I can't do it.

You know, that has a nice stump speech tempo to it - very catchy. It reminds me of Jesse Jackson.

Keep hope alive, John.

we armed saddam so he was our dictator. he attacked iran for us - and lost. iran now have the upper hand in iraq...

You saying it doesn't make it so. Back up your claims with sources. Hell, anyone can say you moved to Thailand to do things that we're banned from joking/talking about on dz.com. Unless they have a source, it's all just hot air and make-believe, isn't it?

We armed Saddam? We armed half the freaking world, if not more. Does that mean everyone out there is "our boy"? I wouldn't say so. And if Saddam was so much our boy that he attacked Iran for us, then why the hell did he attack Kuwait and force the US military to attack to remove his army? See Desert Storm.

What makes you say Iran now has the upper hand in Iraq?
