QuoteThe dispatcher asked Martin's Color. Zimmerman said Black. He didn't have to get closer to check - he already knew.
Well good
At least you admit Zimmerman did not have to get closer to Martin
And since Martin confronted Zimmerman and attacked Zimmerman he sealed his own fate

it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

Oh sorry
I though since you are making unknown and unsubstantiated claims, we all should start doing that. You know, just for fun and all
if we falter and lose our freedoms,
it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

Trayvon was a thug with gold teeth, multiple suspensions from school for drugs, including dealing.
I wonder if he had his gold grill on when he confronted Zimmerman.
Clearly the over-used picture of him as an innocent 13 year old child is working. Still.

QuoteMaybe "thug clothes" are different in different communities. There are communities in which women who wear short sleeves or shorts stand out in a negative way. Is it OK to assume that a woman in a short skirt is probably a prostitute?
Wendy P.
It's not one thing, it's additional factors too. What else is she wearing? Where is the woman standing? What is she doing? Who is she with?
[
Were that same woman standing on a street corner, surrounded by other women dressed similarly and a man in a fur coat standing nearby, evidence suggests that she may be one. This doesn't mean she is or isn't, just percentage of chance of likelihood is higher and may warrant additional suspicion/investigation to confirm.
If ya can't be good, look good, if that fails, make 'em laugh.

Quote>I guess my real problem with this, all potentially institutionalized racism,
>anti-gun-ism, liberal press-montering, etc. aside, is that it seems that a
>private citizen can be walking home from the store without bothering
>anyone, and end up dead by another private citizen, with it somehow
>being legally OK.
Yeah, that seems to me to be the bigger issue here. I think that an ideal outcome might be for Zimmerman to be found not guilty through application of the "stand your ground" law. Then perhaps the anger (and activism) currently focused on Zimmerman would be instead focused on that law.
Except that, given the evidence, SYG doesn't even apply since Zimmerman was on his back and couldn't retreat even if there *was* a duty to do so.
Just changing one scapegoat for another.

Quote>Wandering around between apartment building late at night in the rain IS
>suspicious. Add a hoodie - more so.
Agreed. And someone chasing neighborhood kids around with a gun is even more so. And we now have a law that makes it more OK for them to kill each other.
No evidence of chasing with a gun drawn and the usual misrepresentation of the law....no surprises there.

Where I come from there are quite a few white thug drug dealers with gold teeth. this one just happens to be black.

QuoteSeveral of you seem to have decided that Z was in the right to shoot, simply because he was losing the fight (unless you have specific knowledge of who started the fight).
Nope - again, that's YOUR creation. What has been said is that Zimmerman was in the right to shoot once deadly force was employed against him.
QuoteJust for the sake of the "bigger picture", am I correct to believe that in your opinion a person who starts a confrontation is legally justified in resorting to deadly force if the fight goes against them, and at some point they start to feel their life is in danger?
Where's your evidence Zimmerman started the confrontation? And yes, Florida law allows exactly that under certain cases - like having lethal force employed against you in a fight, even if you started it.
QuoteWhat that leads to is a situation where any belligerent asshole, knowing that they are carrying, can accost someone confident in the knowledge that they have an ace in the hole.
No, that's only true in your made up situation - as stated, the law doesn't allow that scenario.
QuoteThe bigger picture is that if I find myself in a situation where I am walking somewhere I have a right to be, minding my own business, and some ass starts interrogating me, or even tries to detain me, I had better meekly acquiesce. Otherwise I could find myself dead, without any legal repercussions for the shooter. So where are my rights? Don't I have a right to go for a walk and, should it start to rain, pull up my hoodie to keep my head dry? Since when does that give anyone free rein to interrogate, detain, or even shoot me?
It doesn't, but don't let that interfere with the fantasy world you've created.
I love you, Shannon and Jim.

QuoteSo GM's unwarranted suspicion becomes TM's death. Yeah, TM reacted poorly, but it wasn't unprovoked.
It's OK for me to provoke you, and then shoot you if you react strongly enough.
That's correct - if lethal force is being used against you, you have the right to defend yourself.
QuoteAnd I don't even have to try to get to somewhere safe, or be on my own property, or anything else like that.
How are you going to retreat to when you're on your back on the ground, Wendy?
QuoteFucking vigilantes who want every single person to be able to take the law into their own hands. Think of the fun we would have had if TM had been 18, and legally carrying concealed. Of course, he'd still be suspicious for walking to the store
Really, Wendy? Really? How about you quit taking Sharpton/Jackson's word for the situation and actually look up what the law says about it?
I love you, Shannon and Jim.
