Agreed. A lot of more hard-core Christians have a problem with that particular topic, since the Bible not only permits slavery, but gives pointers on it - how to sell your daughter into slavery, how to punish slaves who misbehave etc.
This, of course, does not mean that modern Christianity supports slavery, because our morality evolves (which is a good thing.) But it's also interesting how upset some Christians get over what they call "moral relativity" as if it were the most horrible thing in the world. I think it's a good thing; it's the reason Christians no longer defend slavery as God's will.

This "It's not the religion, it's just a few bad apples who bastardize it" is getting real old. there's two billion Christians, and of those, hundreds of millions wouldn't hesitate a second if they had the chance to force their ways down the throat of every one else. Even in this day and age with the contemporary and relatively civilized brands of Christianity, and back in the days it was way worse. Persecution, torture, murder.... no means were left unused to spread the religion for more than a millennium, destroying other religions and even whole cultures in the process. So that's main-stream Christianity for ya.

He almost certainly wasn't. To most people of the time he was a petty criminal, executed under accepted Roman law. If this had happened today he would have been an illegal immigrant shot by cops. Nothing notable.
And just to be clear I don't think the Bible (or Josephus's writings) are all that accurate on the subject. They started as oral traditions (since back then most people couldn't write, and had no means to do so) and weren't written down for decades. In that time a lot of the details were blurred/distorted/morphed into what people _wanted_ to remember about Jesus.
