Twoply 0 #1 September 10, 2012 I got a job for a friend who had been struggling while looking for work. He reported to work the next week. They sent him home stating that "they didnt need him that." He was destroyed. Two days later, they hired a carpenter that just happened to be black and I was told to keep him busy. If pisses me off that my buddy is working 2 jobs to stay afloat, gets in on a real career job then gets bumped for his color. This affirmative action shit can go bye bye anytime in my book. davjohns 1 #3 September 10, 2012 Wait...you mean the 'E' in EO doesn't stand for 'Equal'? Next, you're going to tell me that people aren't hired for their abilities. Sorry to hear about your buddy. Many of us (caucasian males) have been there.I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

peregrinerose 0 #5 September 10, 2012 My husband has a co-worker that everyone, including himself, calls the 'token black guy'. Also the 'whitest black guy in Harrisburg' as he was adopted by a white family shortly after birth. So yes, people do get hired in part because of race. This guy has the skills to do the job well, so is definitely very qualified and deserves the job, but likely race also played a role. Aren't you making a rather large assumption, based on nothing more than that the new guy "happens to be black", and that you (naturally enough) are disappointed for your friend? Maybe the new guy just knows somebody in the company who has more pull than you do? Maybe he has some specialized skills that make him more worth retaining, even though there may not be a specific need for those skills right at this instant. It's hard to know why your friend was let go, as "they didnt need him that" is missing some key information that leaves us to fill in the blank, which we could do in a way that's sympathetic or not. Didn't need him that day? Didn't need him badly enough to deal with scheduling around his other jobs? Didn't need him badly enough to overlook a drinking problem? Did your friend work for your company at all, even one day? Might he have done something to tick somebody off? Anyway, hope he finds something suitable soon; working two jobs sucks. wmw999 2,534 #7 September 10, 2012 Goes both ways. I've heard the comment made "the law says we have to interview them, but it sure doesn't mean we have to hire them." It was a small enough company that EEO would be exceedingly unlikely to care unless specific suit were brought. davjohns 1 #9 September 10, 2012 Just anecdotal. Take it for what it's worth. At my last assignment, the organization was almost entirely civilians. I was required to answer a quarterly questionnaire with questions such as "How many women / ethnic minorities have you tried to recruit?" and "How many positions have you downgraded to create entry level positions for women / ethnic minorities?". Then, there were annual meetings with one of the EEO reps to answer this stuff all over again and brainstorm ways to get more women and ethnic minorities into the organization. Keep in mind, I saw the demographics...the organization had more women and ethnic minorities than the US population would suggest was appropriate. I finally rebelled. I explained at the meeting that we had a system to determine what pay level a job required and I would not jeopardize my mission to help the EEO office look good. I also explained that I had to have the best qualified people I could get regardless of what they looked like. I filled out the quarterly questionnaire in an even less helpful manner. When asked how many women / minorities I had tried to recruit, I answered, "Do dates count?". When asked how many women I had encouraged to take a position with the organization, I answered, "I offered a few a position on my staff." My boss exempted me from future meetings and questionnaires on that subject.I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

linebckr83 3 #14 September 10, 2012 A few years ago I worked for a now bankrupt company. The management and most employees were shady at best, and everything there was dramatic in one way or another. We had a position open in our shop and interviews were made. Many interviewees were friends of other employees. The guys hired was half black/white and was absolutely amazing at what he did. His skill was incredible and he was perfect for the job. Unfortunately the rumor was that he was hired only for his ethnicity. After daily harassment by other employees, slashed tires, broken windows, hate texts/calls, he quit and we got a total dumbass as a replacement. So there's always exceptions."Are you coming to the party? Oh I'm coming, but I won't be there!" Flying Hellfish #828 Dudist #
Arvoitus 1 #15 September 10, 2012 Imagine living in a society where companies didn't have to hire the token black guy and you could assume everyone working with you was hired because they're the most capable and experienced instead of just having the correct physical appearance.Your rights end where my feelings begin.
