Happy Birthday to the US Constitution

Recommended Posts

the former glory is still here, at least to some of us. i asked another former nco from the army a couple of days ago if he would still uphold his oath...he, like myself, agreed that he would. the oath to uphold and defend the constitution. i just wish that politicians would do the same...

When you have indefinite imprisonment for US citizens without a right to a lawyer or speedy trial it is nowhere near its former glory. Bradley E. Manning just to name one. Gitmo, I can go on and on.

over the last 12 years we lost many rights.

But the indissoluble link of union between the people of the several States of this confederated nation is, after all, not in the RIGHT, but in the HEART. If the day should ever come (may Heaven avert it !) when the affections of the people of these States shall be alienated from each other, when the fraternal spirit shall give way to cold indifference, or collision of interests shall fester into hatred, the bonds of political association - will not long hold together parties no longer attracted by the magnetism of conciliated interests and kindly sympathies ; and far better will it be for the people of the disunited States to part in friendship with each other than to be held together by constraint. Then will be the time for reverting to the precedents which occurred at the formation and adoption of the Constitution, to form again a more perfect Union, by dissolving that which could no longer bind, and to leave the separated parts to be reunited by the law of political gravitation to the center.

Bradley Manning has lawyers.

The people in Gitmo are not US citizens.

Please note, my biggest disappointment in Obama is his failure to close Gitmo. I just think you should deal in real facts, not truthy facts.

There is I believe a few Americans in Gitmo, as long as they are labeled a terrorist it doesn't matter. I believe a few were caught in Afghanistan but are americans none the less

I believe you are wrong about that. There were concerns that under the National Defense Authorization Act, Americans could be detained as terrorists without due process, but I don't believe that has actually happened. I suspect if it did the Supreme Court would be none too pleased.

Nope. The only American citizen ever charged as an enemy combatant was Jose Padilla. He was held as such for three years, but under pressure from civil rights groups was declared a "regular" criminal and tried by the US court system. He was convicted and will spend 17 years in a federal pen for conspiracy to murder and kidnap.
