Oh we can get them to work for free…..

IF you didn’t know I work for a large engineering firm. And in the summers we hire summer interns to help us around and to talent scout early.
I just spent 4 hours in a meeting arguing that as it stands with the current socio economic situation that WE HAVE TO PAY OUR SUMMER HIRES!
And that if we DON’T PAY for summer engineering and science interns we will get shit!

But upper middle management has it in their thick skulls that thanks to all these innovation gurus that have written books that people are willing ready and able to innovate and work for free…….WTF!

Who the hell is this stupid to fall for this shit!
Hey kid come over work for us for 40 hours a week because….you like it! WTF!

My god ok, yes due to black berries and the like we are working well over 50 hours a week of which we are only paid for 40.
We are more efficient than before!
And here you have dumb asses thinking…that people will work for free for them…ah WHAT!
Students working for free for you? Do you know how much car insurance is for these kids?
Do you know how much engineering books cost?

My god am I the only one who thinks this is rude? And just plain stupid?

Should College students be paid to go to attend classes? If not, why not?

Hu? WHAT!
No we are talking summer interns! As in it's their summer job!

Oh, sorry. At most companies, interns are there to learn. Must be different at your company. Why are they there?

Engineering summer interns work for free?
Have you seen how much engineering school costs?

These guys have a better chance of meeting jesus than having any kid worth his or her salt work for free!

I was looking for 1...kid you not 1 computer engineer the other month who knew how to build apps on apple and android...do you know how hard it was!

They have a choice. no one is forcing them to take an unpaid position in exchange for knowledge, contacts and a head start on their career in front of their classmates.

i always envied kids who got plum internships. they got actual practical experience from real world people. The complete opposite of my instructors in school who never had a job i would consider real. In my industry it is a fast track to the elite training programs, putting you years ahead of your peers. I would have paid them money for an intership when i was a kid, let alone do it for free. it would have been a far more meaningful experience then most of my finance classes i had to pay for. I'm man enough to admit i was not a good enough student to get one, though. so i got a paying job.

with that said, maybe your firm is crap and the experience has no value. i cannot say. if they are not getting a meaninful experience from it, then they should leave and get a job on the boardwalk. they have to grow up some time

It's border line slave labor, it will get us in to hot water with the IRS and with our legal department.

I think these managers need to take their heads out of their asses because it's AMERCA!

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!

your response is not inline with my comment. not sure if you meant to reply to me or cannot keep a train of thought.

no reasonable person could compare an intern to a slave. your post is worthless as long as you attempt that link.

What this has to do with America, i have no idea. again you comment makes no sense to a reasonble person

i agree, you get what you pay for. interns are typically quite worthless compared to normal employees. they are basically go-fers. they get exposure in the real world in exchange for menial task though. an exchange they freely agree too. if they feel it is not worthwhle they can quit and get a paying job.

are you not capable of understanding that it is beneficial to young people to exchange their work for experience?

Sorry weekender, I just clicked reply it wasn’t a reply to what you had posted.
With respect to what you had posted, it’s engineering and science, it doesn’t matter if the kid has work experience or not.
I’ll be honest with you most universities have better equipment than most US based companies when it comes to engineering and science.
So in effect a year of slave labor or two really doesn’t make or break the students career. Especially if they are going to eject out after a BS.

The problem is this, right now we are in a shortage of engineers and scientists and they are paid less than what their middle management partners are paid. So by not paying these kids for a full 40 hours of week in the summer months we are just further discouraging the future workforce to overlook engineering and science and look into health care and banking.

And no offence we already have enough financial engineers. And we have seen the great work they have done!

I just spent the morning putting together a memo as to why volunteer engineering and science internships would be a liability nightmare!
All I need is to have one freaking kid get exposed to some chemical and he or she gets sick on the job and his or her parents come after us for damages!

And let’s just face it…it’s morally wrong to have kids working for nothing other than intangibles. That’s like stealing food from the poor.

i feel an unpaid intern who is a student can be a good thing. as i described above. i feel it is wrong and unfair to take a college grad, offer him an internship with no intention of hiring him. if this is what you are describing, i would agree with you that it is an unethical practice.

the intern should wise up and leave. he is an adult and needs to realize when he is being taken advantage of.

That's OK. Supply goes down, demand goes up. Engineers can then name their salary because they are in such high demand. The next generation sees them driving Teslas and Ferraris and thinks "I gotta get me some of that" - and the problem resolves itself.

>And no offence we already have enough financial engineers.

That's also OK. They are a dime a dozen so they get paid peanuts. The next generation sees this and thinks "no thanks."

>All I need is to have one freaking kid get exposed to some chemical and he or she
>gets sick on the job and his or her parents come after us for damages!

?? Do you honestly think that by paying someone their family will be OK with injuring them with chemicals? "Well, yeah, he's scarred for life - but he got $400 that week!"

>And let’s just face it…it’s morally wrong to have kids working for nothing other than intangibles.

I worked my ass off for six years at school. And not only did they not pay me - I had to pay THEM!

Workers comp will cover them if they get hurt.

And Weekend...yeah odds of these kids getting a job here after they are done is very low....so i can't justify it.

They need to get paid and provided mentors!
It's the right thing to do!
