New E.M.P. weapon tested

Recommended Posts

Technically, it's not an EMP. It's a high-power directed energy weapon that uses a beam of microwaves to take out the targets. Probably developed with the help of my old employer, the AF research lab in Albuquerque. I didn't work on this particular application, but our division was definitely studying it.

My particular project was using DE to shut down moving vehicles, which is a much trickier problem that you'd think.

We also worked on the much-vaunted "people-zapper" that came out a few years back, which is a non-lethal riot/crowd control device.

Did some neat stuff at Kirtland.

Could this not theoretically take out incoming nukes and even many other kinds of incoming smart munitions? How does an anti-ship missile hit the ship, indeed detonate, if its electronics are switched off?

Star wars by stealth? Was not the whole threat posed by that the idea that it created first strike capability because it mitigated MAD?

If you're gonna have a war, ya gots to have some BOOM in it,

I dunno, I always thought that the "Hush-A-Boom" would be a pretty cool thing.

So you are proud your company developed a "death ray" whose only purpose is to kill?

not sure if serious...

If you are? Might wanna re-read the article and my post.

If you aren't? well-played? I guess? :S

And my "company" was the US Air Force, and I am proud they are developing ways to NOT kill people, and just kill electronics. Or NOT kill rioting crowds, just force them to disperse. Yes, actually, I think that's pretty damned cool.

and just kill electronics.

it's not killing, it's just aborting electronics. heck, can you even call them "electronics", they are more of a pre-signal hardware mass.

An EMP can certainly kill lots and lots of people. I think that it was a trolled-type comment.

Think of what an EMP do to a nuclear power plant? Imagine an localized EMP directed at a single substation. In the northeast. In January. What if an EMP was directed at the One Wilshire building in Los Angeles (I used to work in that building). It would be economic devastation - and there is no doubt that a lot of people could die from it.
