Ban Assault Weapons?

Recommended Posts

Obama said he would like to do it in one of his presidential debates. And now the Congressional Research Service is laying down the facts for Congressmen who may be considering such upcoming legislation.

Quotes:

"it is likely that there will be calls in the 112th Congress to reconsider a 1994 ban on semiautomatic assault weapons and large capacity ammunition feeding devices."

"This report also includes discussion of other salient and recurring gun control issues that have generated past or current congressional interest. Those issues include (1) screening firearms background check applicants against terrorist watch lists, (2) combating gun trafficking and straw purchases, (3) reforming the regulation of federally licensed gun dealers, (4) requiring background checks for private firearms transfers at gun shows, (5) more-strictly regulating certain firearms previously defined in statute as “semiautomatic assault weapons,” and (6) banning or requiring the registration of certain long-range .50 caliber rifles, which are commonly referred to as “sniper” rifles."

I think we should ban "speeding cars" which I will define as any vehicle with a greater than 2.0 L displacement engine, a gas pedal that travels more than 2 inches, or that has more than 4 forward gears.

Next, we need to get rid of “suicide toasters” which are any toasters that have a power cord length of greater than 1 ft, or that don’t have their own built in GFCI.

I also think we should ban “thieving gloves” which are any gloves that prevent the wearer’s fingerprints from being transferred to objects they touch.

Finally I’d like to do something about “loitering shoes” which are all these new shoe designs coming out with special features allowing you to more comfortably stand in one place for long periods of time.

That might work out OK.

The last time the Democrats did that they lost, the Republicans gained control, and we got nice tax cuts.

I care more about my guns than other peoples' abortions and government entitlements and when push comes to shove there are plenty of other gun owners who'll ignore issues like those not affecting them personally.

>It's been said that enacting gun laws to control violence is like trying to stop
>drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to buy cars.

Well, more like making it harder for all people to buy cars. But I agree that it doesn't work well.

The entire concept is nonsense. It is nothing more than fear mongering and playing on the ignorance of the public. The definition of assault weapons is based on nothing more than cosmetic featyres. Even people who want to ban the rifles can't tell you why. Small guns are saturday night specials (more evidence of the racist roots of gun control). Scoped bolt action rifles are sniper rifles. Rifles so short on power that they are illegal to use for hunting medium game likedeer are called high powered rifles. Guns that vaguely resemble military arms are called assault weapons. Normal capacity magazines (those not artificially limited) are called high capacity mags. The lies and deception go on and on.

This thread brought to you by the WABAK machine discussed the AWB and it's pros and cons.

The arguments for and against gun control are well known. The question is whether Congress will take up the issue. This would be a good opportunity for everyone to write his/her congressperson and state simply, "I hope you (will or will not) renew the assault weapons ban. Thanks for listening; keep up the good work."

On this issue at least, Congress does seem to pay some attention to the public mood.

Said out of fear, with no understanding of history.

The DOJ stated before the ban that less the 3% of crimes were committed with guns that were later banned.

requiring the registration of certain long-range .50 caliber rifles, which are commonly referred to as “sniper” rifles."

Care to list how many crimes have been committed with these 50 cal 'sniper' rifles?

I'm in favor of taking a 3% drop in gun crime when I can get it. That's almost 1,000 lives.

.50 caliber rifles are great for terrorists and can bring down an airliner. We ought to ban 'em outright, but if you're not gonna do that, we ought to at least know where the heck they are, so that when one is used in a crime, we know who to suspect.

Brady Campaign:
"The campaign is also campaigning for the banning of specific high-powered rifles such as .50 caliber rifles. "According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF)," it states, "the .50 caliber sniper rifle has a dangerous history of criminal misuse. This can only worsen as the weapon becomes cheaper and more readily available. BATF has linked .50 caliber BMG sniper rifles to drug dealers, international drug cartels, militia and terrorist groups and a religious cult. Additionally, a 1999 report by the General Accounting Office, 'Criminal Activity Associated with .50 Caliber Semiautomatic Rifles,' stated that of 27 traces involving the Barrett M82A1 (one of the most popular .50 caliber rifles on the market) 18 (66%) were associated with criminal activity."

You will save more lives by banning pools.
You will save MANY more lives by banning abortion.

You clearly do not want to save lives, you have an issue with guns.

AGAIN... please show ONE example of a 50 cal being actually *used* in a crime.

You are calling that the sky is falling without one shred of data.

Be very careful how you word any ban on "assault weapons," because you risk going down the same path as Canada.
In Canada, the list of prohibited weapons includes most modern military issue firearms, including all automatic weapons, submachine guns (Sten, Thompson, Uzi, etc.) and most modern assault rifles (AK series, Galil, M-16 series, etc.), but only one .50 cal. rifle made by Barret is prohibited.

It seems that at the time the list was written, Barrett was the only company manufacturing .50 calibre sniper rifles ... Now a Canadian can buy a .50 cal. sniper rifle from a half dozen other manufacturers. ???

In the end, there are three classes of gun owners in Canada:
1. military and police

2. legitimate hunters, collectors and target shooters who can only choose from limiter "approved" and "restricted" lists.

3. Criminals who can buy any type of gun they want. For example, a small-time drug dealer - from Campbell River - bragged to me that he could get his hands on any machine gun or rocket launcher he wanted.
Just as in Mexico, most of these criminals earn their dollars supplying the American recreational drug market. Canadian drug gangs ship marijuana South in exchange for guns and cocaine.
Unlike Mexican drug gangs, Canadian drug gangs limited their shooting targets to other drug dealers. Just yesterday, a gang leader - and his body guard - were shot to death in a suburb of Vancouver. Police are still looking for the shooter(s) to congratulate ... er ... arrest them.

The "examples" the Brady Campaign claims to have used, but did not actually list, aren't even in the US.

See: http://www.vpc.org/snipercrime.htm

Of course you found another, heavily bias and incorrectly listed, none Brady source, since the actual weapon was not fired in the commission of a crime. Most of those listed just happened to be confiscated after a separate crime. Again week points for a weak argument by you.

I'm curious, what is your personal motivation for your anti-gun stance? Did you have someone in your family that was shot to death?
Look for the shiny things of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. They only last for an instant but it is a Holy Instant. Let your soul absorb them.
