FOX News: Traditional gender roles critical to happiness

Recommended Posts

A review of her book "How to Choose a Husband ..." (from Slate, decidedly not positive):

http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/books/2013/02/suzanne_venker_s_how_to_choose_a_husband_reviewed.single.html

[Interesting tidbit about her: she's Phyllis Schlafly’s niece, and author of a prior Fox New article about the "War on Men".]

Silly people, I like being on a pedestal. I don't ever want to be "equal." B|

Actually, I consider that a pretty good point. I've been in cultures where the women had no desire to embrace the US idea of 'equal'. The women recognized that there is significant power in being a woman if you know how to use it. And they knew how to use it.

Obviously, there are downsides to being a woman. But keep in mind that there are downsides to being a man as well.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

we die earlier, have to buy more of our meals, push stuck cars, have a lot more prostate issues,

to name a few

I'll see your prostate issues and raise you periods and childbirth

... wait -- that didn't sound right :P

Nowhere in the article does it say that gender roles are 'critical' as it does in your headline. In fact, the last paragraph states...

The battle of the sexes is over. And guess what? No one won. Why not try something else on for size? Like this: men and women are equal, but different. They’ve each been blessed with amazing and unique qualities that they bring to the table. Isn’t it time we stopped fussing about who brought what and simply enjoy the feast?

I guess this is typical of your spin.

It was a FOX bashing thread

Might it be FDS?:)

like being expected to whizz standing up even when you're drunk & dog-tired.
I'm just sayin'.

oh and all that extra pay above the glass ceiling. real bummer.

I'm sorry to break the news to you my friend, but the wage gap doesn't actually exist anymore. Nor does the "glass ceiling." Welcome to the 21st century.

There are, however, plenty of men in the "glass cellar." When's the last time you thanked a garbage man? Not many women like to do that kind of work.

Women have been freed from their gender roles, men are still stuck in theirs. Wake up bro.

My brother lives in the phillipines. Needless to say that over there (ive visited twice) and there is NO equality between men and women. Women...and I mean this literally are meant for two purposes over there...cooking and screwing. This is probably the main reason why my brother went over there. They all wait standing up to allow the men to sit down first. He hired a girl from the mountains to help out around the house. Now over there you dont go to the grocery store every few weeks and load up...you go every day. To get enough food for that meal. You get fresh meat and vegetables every day. Obviously the main goal over there is to find food to eat that day. To say the culture difference is night and day is being modest. So back to the girl...she would get thrown off because the month my brother is there they eat meat...every day...which is like a once or twice a month thing for them. So initially she would be guilty and not eat. Then she flipped the switch and would gorge herself. She was unable to find a comfortable medium and eventually they had to fire her due to her mental problems. So if ANYONE from the USA is concerned about womens rights. Go to the phillipines. Learn a few different cultures. Maybe when you get back youll learn the USA isnt so bad after all in that regard.

So you say the women in the Phillipines have "no equality" because they have to work in the home. So, what are the men doing? Most likely highly dangerous jobs, being injured more, and dying younger than the women. They are no more "free" to pursue their "dreams" than the women are. Both are mired in shitty gender roles required for their survival as a unit. Suggesting that the women are in some way subjugated or oppressed more than men is a little silly in this light. I'd rather be in a house than dead.

I'm not necessarily talking about their particular vocations they choose. I'm just talking about my few weeks in the phillipines. I just know that men are around meah

So what are you talking about exactly?

Maybe the women stand when the men enter because they're recognizing the sacrifices the men make to protect and support the family.

What other examples do you have of women being mistreated by men in the Philippines? What was so shocking? Did the men ride around town on the backs of naked women or something?

I spent a total of 5 weeks in Subic and saw much worse. Use equine passengers and you'll be getting closer.

You have a problem with women choosing to be sex workers? Are we blaming men because they are the customers? hmm ok

Travel to south east asia and see for yourself.

I can tell you about their culture all day long but once you see it for yourself you will have a better understanding.

Not to diminish the factual accuracy of what you observed, but I think it's irrelevant to US law or society. Just because things are worse elsewhere doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be better in the US.

(If ever a sentence invited dozens of comparative analogies, the last one does.)
