Speakers' Corner

Quote

Although many of its regular speakers are non-mainstream, Speakers' Corner was frequented by Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, George Orwell, C. L. R. James, Walter Rodney, Ben Tillett, Marcus Garvey, Kwame Nkrumah and William Morris. Its existence is frequently upheld as a demonstration of free speech, as anyone can turn up unannounced and talk on almost any subject, although always at the risk of being heckled by regulars. Lord Justice Sedley, in his decision regarding Redmond-Bate v Director of Public Prosecutions (1999), described Speakers' Corner as demonstrating "the tolerance which is both extended by the law to opinion of every kind and expected by the law in the conduct of those who disagree, even strongly, with what they hear." The ruling famously established in English case law that freedom of speech could not be limited to the inoffensive but extended also to "the irritating, the contentious, the eccentric, the heretical, the unwelcome, and the provocative, as long as such speech did not tend to provoke violence", and that the right to free speech accorded by Article 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights also accorded the right to be offensive.

Interesting.

I've often wondered about the people who post hereon. Are they as arrogant, abusive, and offensive in real life? I hope not. In real life, I would be sorely tempted to punch them in the nose. We tend to do that kind of thing where I'm from.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Here is Sangiro's original post when SC was split off from what was then called Talk Back.

Imagine the mess of having all these discussions combined with Bonfire :o

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Of course, there are those who think that Speakers Corner just allows the security services of the UK to keep an eye on potential troublemakers and subversives.

Why bother to follow them around when you know where they're going to be?

If you are any more considerate and pleasant in real life, I'm sure the Queen would have you for tea on a regular basis. :D

In real life I would have a concealed weapons permit.

Why don't you? Everyone I know does.

It's funny how different real life is than what goes on in here. I have several good friends whom I would consider "bat-shit crazy" when it comes to politics. If I knew only of their political beliefs and not all of their other features, I would probably want to punch them in the nose too. I consider our friendship way more important than politics, so why we all like to talk politics, we know the lines that are not to be crossed, unlike here.

That's why people come here, it's a sport to try and dismantle your opponents beliefs while not having to ever have any other type of relationship with them. I have noticed, that the few people that do know each other in real life, tone it down with each other here.

That's for others to decide; but I will admit to a very strong sense of "stubborn." ;)
Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.
