Explosions at the Boston Marathon finish line area today

(and I only really care about actions - whether or not I'm able to understand the rationale or not)

which I guess has been my point all along

All we know are the actions and results
And these actions are actions of evil (I dont care how it is ratonalized)

Odds are we may never understand
"America will never be destroyed from the outside,
if we falter and lose our freedoms,
it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

So let's say a professional camera operator is standing in front of someone whose leg is blown off and the victim is bleeding to death.

Should the professional camera operator:
1) Put down the camera and provide first aid to the victim to save their life, or;
2) Film the victim bleeding to death so that millions of people can see the stark face of terrorism.

When there are literally hundreds, if not thousands of other people standing there, many of whom are medical professionals from the aid tents? He should stay out of the way and keep filming.

Hundreds or thousands? Are you sure of this? Last year someone suffered a cardiac event at the finish of the Kaiser Half Marathon on SuperBowl Sunday, the largest SF race event in the early part of the year. Due to warmer weather, a number of runners were suffering form the heat and the thin group of EMS folks were tied up. Bystanders attended to this guy who did die. It may not have been any different with the paramedics, but there was no doubt that there were not a lot of them.

And in the case of shrapnel injuries, seconds may be the difference between living and dying. That camera man should attend to any victims that may not be being attended to. If there are none, then great, shoot on, maybe collect some good video evidence.

If the cameraman is the best person to help, and no one else around is capable, sure, he should render assistance. But in the case of the explosions in Boston, there were, in fact, hundreds of other people around. All the cameramen did not need to drop their cameras and render aid. Continuing to film was the best thing they could do. Of course, if they got in the way of other people rendering aid, then that's wrong.

When I first went to Belfast, a young Catholic man said to me 'You can never understand the Troubles, its just pure hatred and you can understand hatred you either feel it or you don't, there is nothing to understand.

My sister lives in Boston, and her roommate was running. They are both OK, thankfully.

For all the speculation about foreign groups, honestly, it would make total sense if it was domestic. Not sure if we have any Mass. residents here, but yesterday was Patriot's day, which is a Mass. state holiday, and many schools and businesses in the state have the day off. Basically, Patriot's day is Boston's biggest party, celebrated to commemorate the battles of Lexington and Concord (the opening battles of the Revolutionary War, for those who aren't up on their history).

The actual battles occurred on April 19, 1775, but like many other holidays, moving the commemoration day to the 3rd Monday in April was logistically easier.

Oh, another reason I lean toward this being domestic...April 19th was also the date of Waco and the OK city bombing. Patriot's day, the start of the Revolutionary War, etc, Some whack job guy or group gets in their head that causing maximum terror on Boston's BEST day would be somehow symbolic.

Just makes more sense to me than AQ or Loyalists.

My friend from Boston posted this on his Facebook just a few hours before it all happened, and it still makes me cry:

today is my favorite day in the greater boston area when we all reflect on the hopes and dreams of common men to unite a country.. paul reveres ride... lexington and concord... today we honor the patriots who started the revolutionary war with the 117th boston marathon... 11am red sox game... and a shit load of day drinking.. good luck to all the runners and god bless america! Have a great patriots day

That happiness and joy is what this bomber took from Boston >:(

Domestic nuts usually aim for something Government, like a Federal building, official, etc. something that represents what they are fighting against. They certainly don't want the entire population against them. Foreign terrorists, otoh, who hate a particular country as a whole, find ample and easy targets with civilians.
You stop breathing for a few minutes and everyone jumps to conclusions.

Typically, perhaps, but not always. See Altanta Olympic bombing.

I hope the Boston Marathon will be twice the size next year as it was this year!

Off topic, but not likely. The current field size is pretty much all the traffic the roads can handle.

Why off topic? We are discussing explosions at the Boston Marathon. I'm planning on taking my whole family next year and I'm going to convince as many of our friends to go as well to show support that these idiots will not ruin our country. There is always the train to Boston! No roads necessary.

>....prevent further attacks.

I wish they could, but I doubt if anything will stop these types of attacks from recurring.
Israel for instance has far better security and are far more aggressive in their methods of gathering intelligence they can use to stop these types of violence, yet they still have these problems.
How do you stop someone from making these types of homemade explosives devices?
They can cook up these explosives in their garages, bathrooms, kitchens, motel rooms, or in a travel trailer.
Now add in the suicide factor and you have a hard if not impossible to stop human weapon bent upon killing people and spreading terror.
There are people and groups who are waging, and have been waging war upon the US for a long time.
People want to feel safe and have a tendency to seek out a false sense of security where there is none.
I'm surprised we have not had more of these types of attacks here in the US in recent years, since they occur everywhere else around the world.
I'm actually surprised some suicide martyr has not driven a 10,000 pound bomb into a hospital or school,or tried to pull off another Oklahoma city type incident.
There are alot of people with a fucked up moral compass in the world, and I'm sure more are born everyday.

did they finish the race? someone asked me that and i said that i would be damned if i ran all that way after getting there and not finish. if they didn't finish, then the terrorists won that one.

My understanding is that they first re-routed a few runners than quickly abandoned the race.

Next we will see and listen to the ass hats who want to understand why. And then blame the US as we have it coming

(and of course we have now had a CNN idiot say it may be a right wing group) Gotta get those political bunchs in first:S

News flash!

Good people will NEVER understand evil

This is an act of evil

Just like the school shooting

Good people will never understand it

Period

And here is an article with a follow up to that. I thought the way they said it on live TV the other day was a little soon, and it did come off wrong. But, evidence is evidence-- and it's all going to come out. All that they're saying is that this has signatures of what right wing extremists have used in the past for their bombs. Doesn't mean just any republican, or some conservative running for office, or your neighbor who is a hardcore republican. It is just one of those crazy nut jobs, probably a lone wolf, from the fringes. Left wing has them too-- like weather underground, anti-capitolists, etc. This event happens to have signatures of right wing extremist groups-- should we deny that? Should it not be reported?
Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

Really?

You are serious?

There are experts who are saying that the bomb type is al quada group uses

So who is correct?

I guess the one that gets out there first is all that counts

>I guess the one that gets out there first is all that counts

The first one was the rumor that a Saudi national was in custody. Reminds me of this incident:

"brahim Ahmad, a Jordanian-American traveling from his home in Oklahoma City to visit family in Jordan on April 19, 1995, was arrested in what was described as an "initial dragnet." There was concern that Middle Eastern terrorists could have been behind the [Oklahoma City] attack. Further investigation cleared Ahmad of any involvement in the bombing."

So you support rumors?

I sure dont

Seems that CNN and Barney Frank needed to get the first shots at making this political

Of course, all the regular characters will get in on it too

>So you support rumors?

Nope. Just pointing out that the first rumor that the media popped out was the "Saudi national" thing. Like the example from the Oklahoma City bombing, such rumors are generally wrong.

>Seems that CNN and Barney Frank needed to get the first shots at making this political

Actually that would be the Post. CNN was later to the party.
