So where is this video? To date only three people on this entire planet (all three who are highly partisan) have come forward saying they have seen the video and yet there is no shortage of people in the consensus mainstream media, people on the late night comedy circuit and millions of partisans who claim that the video is beyond doubt proof that the mayor is a crackhead and needs to resign immediately. Where is the video? Does it even exist? Or was this just yet another example of how dishonest the media have become?

Do we live in a society where media slander is the rule of law and now there is no need to live to the standard of "Innocent until proven guilty"?

You raise reasonable points. Here's how the editorial board of the conservative, generally pro-Ford Toronto Sun addressed those points just today:

It is not enough for Ford to simply dismiss this allegation as “ridiculous,” or to send out third parties to deny it based on what he has told them.

Of course it’s “ridiculous” that the mayor is being accused of smoking crack cocaine and consorting with drug dealers.

The issue isn’t whether it’s ridiculous. The issue is whether it’s true.

Arguments that Ford is entitled to the presumption of innocence miss the point. That refers to the high level of evidence required to convict someone of a crime. But Ford isn’t charged with a crime.

It matters how he addresses this attack on his credibility.

Logically, the first thing a mayor falsely accused of smoking crack and consorting with drug dealers would do, would be to proclaim his innocence in no uncertain terms and sue the media who said it.

Why hasn’t he?

We say this as firm supporters of Ford’s agenda of fiscal restraint.

The mayor deserves praise for saving the public hundreds of millions of dollars through successful negotiations with the city’s trade unions, by contracting out, and by delivering small and reasonable tax hikes while getting city spending under control.

The problem is the drug allegations have now paralyzed this agenda.

It’s a distraction that utterly undermines Ford’s ability to manage a dysfunctional council that opposes any notion of restraint.

Ford needs to directly address these allegations, or get help and step aside.

He must be prepared, for the city’s sake and his own, to do one or the other.

For those who don't know this, the NDP is a Leftist political party. LOL a Leftist Politician who did not pay his taxes? Say it ain't so. If this was a Conservative you know it would be on the front page of the CBC website. Well at least the CBC did run a story, even if it is buried on the back pages.

It seems that Ford held his news conference today, probably in response to (EVEN) the Sun calling on him to speak out. I'm guessing that the reason he fired his chief of staff yesterday was in reaction to similar advice.

Still, the pedantic wordsmith in me can't help but notice his very particular choice of words:

Hmm. Present tense of "use", when past-tense "used" would have been more to the point of whether he did or did not do it. And his reference to addiction might be back-handledly in reply to suggestions that he seek medical help, but it's otherwise diversionary to whether he DID smoke.

Sometimes extreme specificity is a shield behind which to hide. Why no blanket denial that he was caught smoking anything? Why no comment on the video other than simply a refusal to comment "because he hadn't seen it"? The Sun anticipated that dodge, and expressly exposed its weakness.

Hmm...hmm.. If I was Ford's lawyer, that's exactly how I'd advise him on what to say, how to say it, and what not to say. Put another way, I know a cute dodge when I see it; I've composed, thrust and parried them for a living for the past generation.

Of course the presumption of innocence is crucial; but the Sun addressed that point, too. So even after Ford's news conference today, the smell of fish is still in the air. If I was a citizen of Toronto, I'd be left feeling that my questions were still unanswered.

Police Cjief says it does portray what has been reported in the media, but wouldn't say anything else.

Obviously it doesn't contain enough evidence to press charges, they sould have to establish that what was in the pipe was an illegal substance, which would be impossible to do from the video.

I do think it is time for him to step down for the good of Toronto. If he has a substance abuse problem, he needs to get help for that! Hopefully Karen Stintz or maybe John Tory would win the mayorship in the next election. Need more time before the NDP tries to get in again....

I have no issue with him smoking weed.

But his behaviour, coupled with evidence being brought forth now has made it almost impossible for him to do his duty as mayor of Toronto. Hence, he needs to step down for the good of the city.

Then if he has a substance abuse problem he really needs to find help for himself.

I like what Ford stands for and I like what he has done for Toronto. But, he has not done himself any favours and has landed in a position where he is quickly becoming a liability to Toronto.

Like I said, I hope conservative candidates like Karen Stintz (who declared last week she is running in next year's election), or John Tory have a good running in the next election.

Kathrine Wynne came in after that process was completed. Don't take that as me saying I am a fan of hers. McGuinty should be standing in front of a judge.

I am not blaming the media for this though, I blame my fellow citizens.

Huh? Kathrine Wynne is not some new politician. She was a cabinet minister in the McGuinty Liberal Government. She was very much involved in the backroom decision making processes of this government. Actually I am not calling for Wynne to resign. But she should have called an election. Now with her back giving special financial favours to her public sector union allies and with the NDP propping her up, the only losers are the Ontario tax payers who are getting royally shafted.

Wynne was co-chair of the campaign during which the liberals axed the plants to save seats. She did NOT COME IN AFTER THE FACT. And she continued in the stonewalling and cover-up. She should be up for contempt along with Chiarelli, McGoofy and Bentley.

If some old guy can do it then obviously it can't be very extreme. Otherwise he'd already be dead.

Actually what is causing ford difficulty now is a certain police chief defying all rules and holding press conference about an ongoing case (after refusing to comment on how many others including his own conduct in the G20 riots), And it is way to soon to say that Ford can't do his job - he's been counted out before.

I used to think he was a conservative but I watch Tory's show all the time - he seems to have no problems with the way the liberals have conducted themselves since the last election. He is certainly no conservative.

I wouldn't trust Karen stintz further than I could throw her. Rarely seen such a smarmy self-serving ambitious politician in my life.

In this particular case it seems to be the chief of police out to get ford. Totally inappropriate. funny he couldn't talk about other investigations, but he can talk about this one about his boss.
