World Cup will be very interesting

Brazil’s World Cup preparations continue to be crashed by waves of violence, with an amateur football match ending in horror – when a referee was decapitated after stabbing a player to death.

The incident occurred on June 30th (NZT) in the stadium Pius XII, in a small county of São Luís, Maranhão.

According to Correio24horas, it started when referee Octavio da Silva Catanhede Jordan red-carded Josenir dos Santos Abreu.

Josenir refused to leave the field and proceeded to verbally abuse and assault Octavio.

The 20-year-old referee retaliated by stabbing the 31-year-old player multiple times with a ‘machete–like’ knife, that he was carrying on his person during the match.

Whilst Josenir was taken to hospital in critical condition, friends and relatives invaded the field – tying up the referee and torturing him.

Upon hearing the news that Josenir had died on arrival at a local hospital, Octavio was stoned to death on the field.

His body was then quartered, decapitated and his head was pierced on top of a stake.

The lynching was captured on cellphones by onlookers, making its way to social networks, where the police were able to identify one of the suspects - Luis Sousa Moraes.

He was arrested on July 3rd (NZT) and two other suspects were identified and questioned.

In an official statement by Valter Costa, police chief of Santa Ines in Maranhão – he confirmed that the investigation was ongoing.
“Reports of witnesses have indicated some people that were in place at the time of the fact. We will identify and hold accountable all those involved. A crime will never justify another. Actions like this do not collaborate with the legality of a state law.”

:S Ah, yes, indeed. A most unfortunate breach of protocol.

It's not a real sport like college football. Now that is something to get worked up about!

>Certain member of victim's family and friends rip ref to pieces.

Well, he could have been a threat. After all, there was an altercation and someone was injured. What, you want the spectators to just stand there while a criminal assaults them? For shame!

I suppose if you're going to commit cold-blooded murder it's better to fly to Hong Kong first, than do it in front of 50,000 people.

I didn't read the whole story. Was the ref following the player before returning to his vehicle when the player confronted him? Where are the 911 tapes?
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Hey, if it can't kill ya, it's a game, not a sport.

Soccer, it turns out, is a full-fledged sport.

WowZer-
Seems to me a good old fashioned butt whooping would have sufficed. [:/]

No, an arrest, trial and life sentance would have sufficed. Now that'll have to happen to the mob* instead of the ref.

* Some of whom I would hope are already being plagued with crippling remorse, nightmares, and thoughts of "Oh dear god, what have we done?" that will last for the rest of their lives. (Huh, that was a bit of a downer this early in the day. So... Boobies!:)
Do you want to have an ideagasm?

You're absolutely right about sentence, I've always had a blind spot with that word. But while I appreciate your suggestion I'm not going to start mucking about with the clunkiness of spellcheck because of one errant 'e'. Baby, bathwater, etc.:)

So, the ref lost his head and stabbed the player . . . right?
I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama

So effectively communicating your thoughts isn't a priority? Not that it's any surprise.
