Did the Zimmerman trial increase racism?

Recommended Posts

SOOOOOO . . .

I was driving home yesterday, and was behind a guy in a Chevy PU. Decent truck, fairly new, good condition.

Something on the toolbox slid off and hit the road tumbling. It looked electronic and looked kind of expensive.

Traffic was heavy, so I pulled over, picked it up, and was back in traffic again in under 5 seconds.

Looking at the item, I recognized it as GPS receiver for a Survey Station.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leica-GPS-GX1230-GG-Glonass-Base-Station-System-1200-/271236753906]Just the controller on the left (looks like a scientific Calculator)

Knowing it was a very expensive piece of equipment, I sped up, got beside the driver, got his attention and told him he dropped something off his tool box, and before I could even hold it up to show him what he had lost, he said, "Fuck You, you mutha-fucking-white assed - cracker muther fucker!"

I was taken aback a bit, but still tried to get his attention to show him the device.

I guess he didn't want it, because he turned right and sped off.

What could have made him take a stance like that?

After thinking about it a bit, I was wondering how much racism fire was fanned into flames over the Zimmerman trial, publicity, and Verdict.

So I ask . . . In your opinion, did the case and verdict cause more racial unrest?

AND - WTF?

My next thought was that maybe he stole the truck . . . but then I felt bad for profiling.[:/]

Edit to fix clicky.

I bet he didn't even understand what you were saying, assumed it was road rage, and downshifted into "road rage mode" himself.

Are there any property tags on the unit that would tell you what company owns it? Maybe make a call to the manufacturer to see if they can trace it by serial number? I'm SURE the company would love to hear how well this employee takes care of their equipment, and how they handle themselves when on the road representing the company.

I'm torn.

Insulted and spiteful me says I should take it to ebay, craigs list, or Pawn Stars.

The good deed side of me has already called the manufacturer and given them the serial number.

Maybe the company will issue a reward . . . if not, then I will feel better about myself anyway.

. . . and no, I'm positive he heard me. He looked back after I told him he dropped something.

and we were only going about 3 MPH, pretty much a no wind day. Perfect for swooping.

You making this post acknowledging the idea of racism is making it worse...

Do you follow and believe in every religion out there?

Just because he's a believer doesn't mean you have to be.

Are you insane?:S

Acknowledging that something exists does not make anything worse or better.
That is like saying that doing your math homework makes math worse or better.

You must be one of those that believe that statistics cause racism.:S

It wasn't the trial that's increasing it. But the media and president and all the dialogue now has certainly taken the incident and is pushing the effort to reduce racism in the wrong direction.

But that's just S.O.P.

Edit:

1 - doesn't belonging to the Community Watch kinda fall under the aspices of "It takes a village?"

2 - The Exec branch is responsible for the justice system. Isn't it a bit crappy that so many that love the exec branch are bitching about it. And the president himself isn't supporting the process we've accepted to use as a society? He had a 'real' chance here to take steps to speak up for justice for all rather than favoritism for PC thuggery and make a difference in how the issue is viewed....

I learned in Schoolhouse Rock that the Judicial Branch is responsible for the judicial system. Maybe I'm misremembering.

You mean like when he said the trial is over and the Feds won't be stepping in? Yeah, that was a real lack of support.

I have a lot of black friends, and they all had the same reaction. WTF if this kid was not black this guy would be jailed for life.
Most were irrational and if they had a young kid around the same age they were pissed.
The ones I talked to couldn’t see my point of view at all. Even if they could it was almost like they could not agree with anything negative about TM. Now please understand my PO was that the dude was guilty but in my book of a mistake not of cold blooded murder.
The reality is there is no way to ever make right all the wrongs down to black people, and they will always be suspicions of whites and for good reason.
There are many examples of injustices especially when it comes to the criminal justice system, I mean really its injustice to poor people but injustices none the less.

Exec is responsible for carrying out the law of the land. Judicial branch is a bit different. You know that.

His lead quote was great and that was exactly what was needed. too bad he didn't stop at that or really act like he believed it, huh?

I took Obama's statement as a plea to the idiots marching in the streets to come up with a constructive way to "honor" Martin, not as endorsing the idea that he should be honored. It's tough to come up with a sound bite that will reach your intended audience, and not get picked apart by the haters.

haters are bad. I hate haters

(as a tangent, you phrased that response pretty nicely. I grok it.)

Whatever he said sure got everyone's mind off of things like the IRS scandal and a couple other important matters. The guy is real slick!

If the other driver called you a cracker - that's bad.

If he said cracka it's not racial.

Well, ya see . . . I didn't know how serious you would take the thread if I spelled it all out phonetically.[:/]

I was just trying to be nice . . . makes me REALLY not want to be nice next time.[:/] That is unfortunate, I like doing nice stuff for strangers.

So I ask . . . anyone know how to program waypoints on this thing? It looks good mounted on my dash.

:D:D:D

I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

How about you get organized before you start typing? That is two completely seperate questions.

IMO it did not increase racism.

IMO it did cause more racial unrest.

Increase it?

No. I don't think so.

What it did was force us to recognize how much racism (in many different directions) is still present in society.

There is a lot of racism still around. Many folks don't see it, or refuse to acknowledge it. There are a fair amount of folks who are pretty racist, but claim that they are not.

And they get pretty uncomfortable when it's shoved in their faces.

So what you are alluding to is that the racism was exacerbated, correct?

Would it also be correct to say that some, if not many, closet racists came out of the woodwork a little more on one side than the other?
