‘Toilet-To-Tap’ Water Purification Coming To South Bay

ALVISO (KPIX 5) – The source for Santa Clara County’s newest, cleanest and virtually limitless water is the new $68 million sewage treatment plant near Alviso, but the ultra clean water won’t be going into homes due to the stigma regarding recycled water.

The new Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center will open this fall, but due to public perceptions, the water from the plant will be diverted for use in fire hydrants, landscaping and electrical fountains instead of homes.

“It takes a long time to educate folks and grasp this concept that this water can be purified to a level that’s cleaner than what we are already drinking,” said Marty Grimes of the Santa Clara Valley Water District. “The reality is that we are able to produce water that is cleaner than all of our other water sources.”

I'd have no problem with it, if it were set up with a strong enough system to ensure no "oops" incidents. Then again food poisoning and nasty drinks are available on every street, so what's the difference?

eta: I live where you can't even compost in your yard, put up a small windturbine for power, or put up a system to run off rainwater, so this won't hit my area for a few decades.

The most popular bottled water in FL is Zephyrhills Water. Those that jump at z-hills can tell you that the only thing that separates the bottling plant from the Zephyrhills Sewage Treatment Plant is a chain link fence. I have always had my suspicions about that. :S

Then again, you probably ( like most people ) have no idea of what is in the water you're currently drinking. Ever ask????

This reminds me of the time Pres. Nixon visited a water treatment plant and the manager asked him if he would like to try some reprocessed urine. The plant manager took a drink, offered it to Nixon who politely declined.

No guts, no glory is what I say.

Of course, you felt it was your doody.

This whole thread pisses me off.

Better to be pissed off than pissed on . . . but then again, you can wash the piss off . . . and in some places drink it after a while.

I found ZHills bottled water in Grand Cayman last year.

It may piss you off, but evidently, others are fixated on it. It keeps popping up as either #1 or #2.

it is likely inevitable in low water, high population areas, or desalination for the coastal regions. But one of the big differences between the US and so many other nations is that you can use the water coming out of the faucet without worry of nasty pathogens. Clean, abundant water is a huge differentiator in health. I'd rather not rely on the water that was once sewage, even if its true that pathogen like giardia are already a threat in the normal water supply.

You can pretty much guarantee that every drop of water you drink contains molecules of H2O that have previously passed through a bunch of kidneys, human and animal.

I'm not worried about where the H20 molecules have been. I'm worried about the shit (literally and pathagen) that is swimming along next to the molecules. Water that evaporates from the ocean and condenses in the mountains is a bit different than filtered/treated toilet water, in terms of its friends.

Drinking unpurified water from mountain streams is not recommended due to pathogens in it. People get sick and die from it on a somewhat regular basis. :|

Back around ten years ago if you read on the bottom of the ozarka label it would list its source as Houston Municipal Water Supply.

Die? Where are we talking about? And what - some sort of amoebic disentary?

In the Sierra, people have been been doing simple filtering for a few decades because of the giaradia concern. But more and more have been disregarding as it seems like an overstated threat.

This is an interesting article.

Having had giardia, I would never choose to be cavalier. YMMV.

the article is a bit on the sensational side - 90 Trillion cells of parasites! But how many cases of infection, or death as you alluded?

I got my filter and my steripen (now preferred), but hearing more and more that are foregoing. I certainly don't see myself filtering, iodining, and refiltering as suggested by that author. One could die of thirst by the time that is over!

Happy with the idea of this one, just need to make sure that the water quality is constantly and randomly assessed to ensure that things like fecal matter (Pooooo!), pathogens and chemicals are all within some predefined 'safe' level.

This is one of those situations very much like when I ask my Americans friends if they would like to try tongue. If they know what it is they hate it if they don’t they think it’s the best thing they ever had.

So I think just knowing it would fuck it up for me, and just the opposite if I didn’t know and couldn’t tell I wouldn’t care.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

In London the water we drink has been biologically filtered through the nephrons of six other people before we drink it. Tastes fine to me and we've been doing it for decades. On taste tests you can tell it from mineral water.
