DanG 1 #26 July 25, 2013 Women are constantly described as beautiful when beauty is irrelevant. Men are almost never described as handsome unless it's pertinent (the handsome actor, the handsome model, etc.). If you don't think there is a double standard when it comes to physical appearance, I must disagree. - Dan G
lawrocket 3 #27 July 25, 2013 Right. As if Clinton and Gore starting in 1992 were not credited on their physical appearance. See Eleanor Clift, etc. And then the response of Clinton as a Bubba and how his "didn't inhale" statement wasn't true at McDonald's. The debates on whether or not he was actually good looking. The focus on Clinton's and Gore's youth and good looks versus the crusty old George HW Bush and his ugly-ass wife. Give me a break. It happens with guys, too. All the time. Again, I point to Chris Christie. How about Tony Blair and the frequent comments in later years that he had lost his attractiveness? How about the comments on the now-obese Al Gore? Men ain't immune. I take it you don't notice it. Or maybe don't acknowledge it. My wife is hotter than your wife.
NorrinRadd 0 #28 July 25, 2013 We also have a politician up here in Canada... Justin Trudeau, who will most likely be running for Prime Minister next election. He raised money for a charity by doing a (non naked) strip-tease. In this day and age, men are slowly becoming just as objectified as women. Why drive myself crazy trying to be normal, when I am already at crazy? lawrocket 3 #29 July 25, 2013 Just as? In this day? Always have been. Read Fahrenheit 451. There's a Presidential election in the book and the candidates are discussed entirely on the basis of their appearance. That book was published in the early 1950s. My wife is hotter than your wife. Gravitymaster 0 #30 July 25, 2013 And Kennedy-Nixon debates where those watching it on TV thought Kennedy won but those listening on the radio thought Nixon won.
wmw999 2,446 #31 July 29, 2013 QuoteJust as? In this day? Always have been.I disagree in some ways. Men may be judged just a lot on appearance (I agree entirely), but the willingness and unsanctioned ability to write about it when writing about women legitimizes that objectification. Wendy P.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence.
