shropshire 0 #1 October 8, 2013 QuoteResearchers at a US lab have passed a crucial milestone on the way to their ultimate goal of achieving self-sustaining nuclear fusion. NIF, based at Livermore in California, uses 192 beams from the world's most powerful laser to heat and compress a small pellet of hydrogen fuel to the point where nuclear fusion reactions take place. The BBC understands that during an experiment in late September, the amount of energy released through the fusion reaction exceeded the amount of energy being absorbed by the fuel - the first time this had been achieved at any fusion facility in the world. babz 0 #2 October 8, 2013 It's great to see some progress in this area, regardless of which nation it comes from. If humanity an crack Fusion it should end our reliance on fossil fuels (make fuel almost free). It's rather exciting to think that this is something we may see in our lifetime - I remember my old physics teacher claiming that we were about 50 years off from it back in 2003.. Lets hope he was a bit pessimistic :)

I love this and the science is exciting but the myth of Free energy is just that .. you are never going to be able to do this at home!! - so you'll be paying someone and they will be coining it (for one thing, to pay for the research - which ain't cheap. and for another Power is POWER ... you'll want it, they've got it !! Free in the sense of raw materials. There's nothing cheap (or shouldn't be) about a plant that is focusing hundreds of lasers to create a fusion reaction. But think of the current costs of obtaining material - wars, oil spills, collapsing coal mines, the terrible air quality in China, the CO2 emissions. Well, the fuel is almost free, which is nice. If you want really free energy, get solar. Then you'll have your own source.

Don't be so sure. I have this guy Walt, working in my lab in the basement. He's a real genius with chemistry and physics. He says he'll have it up and running in a month...make that two weeks.
