What jobs will employ the masses?

Recommended Posts

No, the agencies get the power because the congresscritters know fuck-all about what the specific limit should be for human safety on various pollutants in water and-or air. It's called delegation, and every single business does it.

Should they vote on speed limits as well?

Congress approved the setting up of OSHA and the EPA when they were formed. Congress approved the ACA.

Specific implementation is left to people who actually know something.

This is not the way it is supposed to be

Did you know that right now, as I type this, the EPA has a proposed rule out there that would give them power to regulate standing water in a ditch on your property?

Take your pick

Do you want these people to have this kind of power?

There's not a lot of detail on the specifics in that article. But I know that there are cities in Texas that regulate how much dirt you have to have on your lot (i.e. that residential lots can't just pave over all the dirt).

Why? Well, because all that paving means that the guy down the street is subject to more flooding, because there's less space for the water to soak in. So that one guy's freedom impacts another's life.

Yes.

For example, if the EPA had power over phosphorus runoff from farms the recent toxic algae blooms that shut down Toledo's drinking water supply wouldn't have occurred. However, special interests (and morons) that oppose regulation have ensured that this won't happen.

It's BECAUSE industry and agriculture have proven incapable of self regulation that we have an EPA (created, incidentally, by a GOP president).

So, it's time to bring this thread back to life because CGP Grey just put out a video on YouTube that says essentially what I was saying about nine months ago.

Check it out.

That's a good video. I recently attended an evening seminar/cocktail sponsored by the Economist Magazine on disruptive technologies; there were two main areas of focus - advances in robotics and 3D printing. They had live examples there from both areas. It was quite amazing to see where we're really at in both areas. Saw items unlike anything I've seen on television or YouTube, as much was shown by private companies in development.

Yes simple logistics jobs of merely moving stuff from A to B will gradually disappear/lessen, but there are also huge swathes of the unskilled/semi-skilled workforce that are involved in producing/packaging/storing/distributing various kinds of widgets. Not too far into the future, much of our mass-produced widgets will be made at home or by stopping by your local 3D Print Shop.

No matter what your view or forecast - the future will not be the place to be an unskilled worker.
