Who was the worst president, and why?

Recommended Posts

All President's seem to do a bit of damage, so if your criteria is which did the most, whose actions completely and unjustifiably caused the most deaths both foreign and domestic, squandered the good faith and trust of the world, drove the US closer to a police state, I think you'd be hard pressed to find an example worse than George W. Bush.

I know some are going to disagree, but I dare them to back it up with facts.

I'd like to place obama firmly in 2nd place to GWB.

NSA
Benghazi
Obamacare
Fast and Furious

Need I go on?

He's not gone yet. Better hang on to your seat (and wallet). I would like to add Egypt, Libya, and Syria: stable countries with stable leadership until BHO interfered. Of course the liberals will argue BHO just wanted to give them American style democracy to include Kentucky Fried Chicken, Coors Lite (under sharia law)...

I've got to look at a period that I have some decent knowledge of. So it's the last fifty years or so.

The worst president was Bill Clinton - for the first two years he held office. He was so bad that the Republican revolution in November 1994 occurred. To his credit, his remaining years were among the best.

Worst? I've got Dubya and Obama running neck and neck, with Obama seemingly having the stuff to make a stretch run.

>>> whose actions completely and unjustifiably caused the most deaths both foreign and domestic - Dubya made a good start. Obama brought it further by bragging about killing people with drones, etc.

>>> squandered the good faith and trust of the world - you'd have thought that Bush had this one wrapped up. Then the Syria situation happened, as well as the Snowden and the NSA issues. Germany is pissed. The President got schooled by Putin, as did Kerry. We don't hear anything about Biden fucking up anymore because our own President is doing a fine job of it on his own.

The Arab Spring and the Syria situation destroyed what was left of US credibility. Under Bush the US wasn't trusted but was feared. Under Obama, the US is becoming a laughing stock.

>>> drove the US closer to a police state - yes. And Obama took his turn as relief driver of that bus. He actually strengthened all of it. See, here's the question: are we closer to a police state now than we were 6 years ago? If the answer is "no" then you're smoking something. If "yes" then by definition the current president is more extreme.

That's the problem with Obama - he took what Bush did and did it more. It's why I think that Obama may yet be able to pull off being the worst president ever. Unlike Clinton, he didn't learn.

Sorry for the emotional outburst, but I just realized we have worn out our welcome in that part of the world. Now, they don't even want our money or things that go bang.

***Robert Mugabe, that guy is a racist arsehole.

Oh I should have been clear. I mean president of a country that matters. It probably matters to the farmers who hung on for all those years. Wonder how many remain.

Obama Is FIRMLY in the #1 spot. He's a "WACKO BIRD" as John McCain would say.

What I don't understand is how the American voters put him back in office for a second term! :S

***Only 1 ever got impeached!

But acquitted.

Only one had to resign in disgrace. Didn't Jimmy Carter give a presidential pardon to Bill Clinton, the draft dodger? I believe he was the first Federal Felon to be elected President of the United States. His home state of Arkansas disbarred him from practicing law. You have to admit the Rhodes Scholar has a bit of sleeze factor attached to his hide.

Actually, by these standards, a good argument could be made for Abraham Lincoln. He started a war that resulted in the death of 2% of the US population. WWII only accounted for 0.3%. The merits of that war are still debated today. I doubt it bolstered US credibility world-wide.

Harry Truman dropped the only two nuclear weapons ever used in anger...on civilian targets.

FDR presided over Japanese Americans being treated like criminals for their ethnicity.

If you want to look at personal conduct, you might consider Andrew Jackson. He was reported to have participated in dozens of duels behind the White House while he was President. He was known as Old Hickory because he carried a hickory stick to beat people with. Then, there's the whole Indian Removal Act.

JFK's sexual appetites while in office were said to put Slick Willy to shame.

Carter was a nice guy, but totally unsuited for the office.

Teddy Roosevelt kept wild animals in the White House as pets.

We've had our share of doozies. History will judge the more recent examples. But looking back in time, it's hard to say anyone during my lifetime is even in the running for 'worst'.

Lincoln probably also took the most blatant shits on the Constitution, glad you brought that up.

Lincolin (And Nixon) were also Republicans! Is that what we were fishing for? I can't remember if we're right-wing wingnuts or left-wing wingnuts up in here. Looking at recent titles, I'm guessing right-wing wingnuts. Otherwise they'd all be about hugging pandas and eating granola.

Speaking of hugging pandas and eating granola, Nixon also founded the EPA. Admittedly at the time several US cities had reputations for having undrinkable water and unbreatheable air. I guess all those rivers catching on fire was pretty unpopular with everyone, too. I was pretty shocked when I finally made it to Romania and the air quality in even the little town where I was at was atrocious. By the end of a week there my lungs hurt. Then I got on the plane and they announced it was a smoking flight back to London. Ouch. That was back in the 90's. They may have improved since then.

I was so tempted to stop by Istanbul while I was there. It used to be Constantinople, doncha know? I also hear you can get the world's best sandwich there.
I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

I'm a very poor historian...even more so when it comes to the history of political parties. But I don't think there is any comparison between modern 'Democrat' or 'Republican' to those US parties who once went by the same names. In fact, I think there has been flip-flopping on the political spectrum over the years.
