We are not on the same page.

here's my 'page' on just about EVERYTHING (item 1 better be reflected in all my posts, political, social and otherwise)

1 - I trust adults to make their own decisions and to take responsibility for their own decisions.
2 - Parents should raise children to be good adults.
3 - Adult decisions should wait until the child becomes an adult.

follow the logic for this specific scenario
a - marriage is an adult decision
b - therefore, the person getting married makes that decision
c - therefore, minors do not get married
d - therefore, the responsibility of the parent in this regard is to NOT LET A CHILD MARRY. Rather, raise them to choose wisely once they are an adult, and hopefully, the parent does a good enough job such that the, finally, adult offspring, respects the advice of the parent (advice does not equal control).

individual freedom and self determination and responsibility for adults is not negotiable - it's the absolute moral keystone

That is a workable plan. I just don't think fathers need to abdicate the position of love in favor of previous instruction. It is a different idea.

In my world I see families stick together for up to three generations. They discuss and pray about decisions as a family.

They both remarried. The first was around 30 and the second around 40. The first was an 8.5 year relationship and the second 12.

I've been married to my present wife 19 years.

This explanation for the those unfamiliar with the show, just cracked me up:

"For the uninitiated, Robertson is the super-rich but conspicuously déclassé inventor of a life-like call for duck hunters. “Duck Dynasty” is a reality show that purports to expose the tension between his family’s wealth and its poor, rural roots. Like if the Clampetts had decided to stick around the hills of Bug Tussle after Uncle Jed’s fortuitous misfire, rather than move to Beverly Hills".

I thought I was.

In my understanding you are committing adultery.

No. I did commit adultery once during my first marriage but so did she. We were in the skydiving community then not Christian. I've been forgiven, repented and never did again.

Yet you're twice divorced.

Divorce is an abomination before the Lord. And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.

No?

God prefers there be no divorce. However, He provides for it in both the Hebrew and the Christian writings.

In the case of my second wife, she relapsed and left me in FL and moved back to CA. She missed the partying. I waited a year before filing.

Thanks for the reply.

You surely must realize the hypocrisy.
It's the selective understanding, acceptance, and adherence to the bible that I will never understand.
I had reached the conclusion (me personally) that most of the people that declare themselves to be christian, simply lived as they desired and prayed for a lot of forgiveness.

This and zero belief in this god thing is why I can't understand religion.

I don't intend this to point at you, just that you appear to have an understanding or acceptance of religious teachings, so I thought you might understand.
Sorry if you consider this insulting, I truly do not intend for it to be.

No problem, you are one the SC folks that will hold my feet to the fire without being insulting. You are not the insulting type.

I will do some research and see if I can find a knowledgeable answer for your dilemma. Right now I am helping to store away Christmas decorations. Later.

I guess for me this whole thread is a joke
The only reasons all those going after Phil is he is a Christian and he is sucesseful

no the reason people are "going after him" is he said marry them when they are 15 because by the time they are 20 they are not good wife material.

Seems to me he thinks it is better to "raise" a wife from childhood than to find an equal to spend the rest of your life with.

of course that is my take I cannot read his mind

Good a read as any

while I do not agree with what he said (even if a joke) I still dont think it is worth all the gnashing of teeth over it

right up until his 38 year old brother starts eyeing your 12 year old daughter - then the gnashing will begin

Ron pretty much notes that, in reality, the whole family has the discussion. but behind that, the choice of the girl would be paramount. That's about as good as this scenario can turn out.

But not every family is as decent as his probably is. The whole thing smacks of selling off the daughters regardless of their desires or maturity levels.

It's happened too much in so many cultures around the world to ignore.

MEH

If it happens here it is rare and would most likely be of a family that moved here that has kept thier own cultural values

You want to make this a big deal? Go for it. That is your choice

but I will continue to chuckel at those who push to make this into something it is not

Reference specific to the divorce question:
http://www.focusonthefamily.com/marriage/divorce_and_infidelity/should_i_get_a_divorce/how_should_a_christian_view_marriage_and_divorce.aspx

Quote

But are there any cases in which the Bible allows divorce? Many Christians disagree about whether the Bible allows divorce and/or remarriage. If you are concerned about whether you have biblical grounds for divorce, you will need to commit the matter to prayer and study. You should also seek out counsel from your own pastor and, ideally, a licensed Christian counselor. The question of sin cannot be taken lightly. But biblical grounds may exist:

When one's mate is guilty of sexual immorality and is unwilling to repent and live faithfully with the marriage partner. Jesus' words in Matthew 19:8-9 indicate that divorce (and remarriage) in this circumstance is acceptable. That passage reads:

"Why then," [the Pharisees] asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?" Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries [or, 'in order to marry'] another woman commits adultery." (Emphasis added)

However, divorce is not required. If your spouse has committed adultery, divorce is morally allowed, but not required. Many couples have been able to rebuild their marriages even after such a devastating blow.
When one spouse is not a Christian, and that spouse willfully and permanently deserts the Christian spouse (1 Corinthians 7:15).

In a broader sense, I caution you as I often do jclalor, do not think that the Bible can be read as a tech manual. We need the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to guide our study.

All behavior is either sinful or righteous. The Hebrew writings provide for the atonement of sin once per year at Yom Kippur. God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to be the propitiation and atonement for sin for all mankind. It is a gift that must be accepted through surrender to Christ.

Righteous behavior keeps us in relationship with our Father in heaven. Sin separates us. Without being able to repent and seek forgiveness one sin would separate you from God without recourse.

It is not that we pick and choose, although I am certain that some try, it is that once convicted by the Holy Spirit we can repent and pray for forgiveness.

Too funny. Even after Ron has given specific examples your view is: It doesn't really happen, but when it does happen it is the transplanted brown people.

The Pope is christian and succesful as well, but when he starts advocating marrying 15 year olds, I am going to call him an idiot....and not because he is christian and successful.
