In the recording, McConnell offered this opinion of the Tea Party’s lack of recent electoral success:

“They have their strong base, their core. But, they don’t have success courting the middle. You know why? It’s their overt racism. The Tea Party hasn’t learned to conceal its racism. That’s where they fail. The Republican party knows better. Want to keep minority voters from the polls? Fine, set up hindrances to “prevent voter fraud”. Want to cut social services? Fine, but do it for “fiscal conservatism”. These Tea Party idiots and their supporters are out hollering the N word, calling Obama an ape, suggest Michelle is a transvestite. That alienates the middle. That’s what costs them. You want to think those things? Think them to yourselves. You want to legislate against that them? Come up with an excuse. The Tea Party will remain an also ran unless they work on their poker face a bit more” McConnell goes on to criticize his opponent Matt Bevin’s slow manner of speaking and “awkward eyebrows”, saying that both were “off-putting” to voters. The recording concludes with the advisor asking McConnell if he wants Chick-Fil-A or KFC for lunch, to which McConnell replied in obvious anger “You know I only eat the Colonel”. The secret recording will obviously make it more difficult for the Minority Leader to control an already raucous Republican caucus and will only enlarge the rift between more moderate Republicans and members of the Tea Party

Well, National Review trips up a lot of people. There is a fine line between satire and trolling. I'd say National Review doesn't do a very good job of making the satire obvious enough.

It could be worse. It could be The Rush Limbaugh Show who has followers who think he's the real deal and a host who doesn't seem to know the difference between reality and fantasy himself.
