What's your solution?

If your saying that I just blindly posted that link which included a statement that supports dons rebuttal your wrong. I read the whole thing. I already agreed with him on the polio issue after he pointed it out, and it also happened to be in the link. The rest of the statement from a doctor is the point.

Trying to make an issue out of a non issue?

*shrugs*

I invite people to read the article you linked to and decide what to make of it.

Excuse me for not being a doctor, but we all can agree they are "walking pathogens bringing 3rd world diseases"

How anybody can come to that conclusion, after reading that article, is completely beyond me.

I read it, and it does an excellent job of debunking the whole issue. Then, it rates the statement "true". WTF? The rating is the opposite of what the article says? Anyway I didn't respond at the time because a point by point rebuttal would take more time than I care to invest.

Basically, the whole issue comes down to: "those people have got cooties!" As if we would keep out Israeli or Japanese kids because they have head lice.

Bad editing.

It rates the claim that it was said as true, not that what was said is true.

He pointed out that polio was a non issue in the western hemisphere. I did not know that. In the article a fucking DEPARTMENT OF STATE HEALTH SERVICES person stated that it was a NON ISSUE so I reversed my comment on that.

Quote

Department of State Health Services for guidance, spokesman Chris Van Deusen said by email that Tom Betz (not Tim Metz) was at one time the manager of the agency’s Infectious Disease Surveillance and Epidemiology branch.

Van Deusen didn’t directly speak to what Patrick reportedly said in 2006, but he indicated immigrants aren’t showing up as bringing most of the diseases listed by Patrick.

Polio, Van Deusen said, has been eradicated from the Western hemisphere and "we don’t generally see cases in Texas.

How are either of us wrong exactly?

Just google the phrase "illegal immigrants diseases" and read for yourself im not wrong they need to have their health checked and vaccinated before being allowed into the U.S.

Arriving with illegal immigrants
Changes in Chagas' prevalence are therefore related to infected people migrating to the United States. "The concentration of positive blood donors is in areas with larger concentrations of immigrant populations," Montgomery said. Cases emerge occasionally in Texas and Oklahoma, but triatomines do not seem to be spreading any farther.

However, as the economy improves, immigration may become a greater disease pipeline. "A lot of people don't come here through the so-called legal channels," said Marian McDonald, associate director for health disparities at the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at CDC. "Changes in the global economy have really sort of propelled immigration to the United States, and that doesn't seem like it would change anytime soon."

Ah, I see. So when you said "Excuse me for not being a doctor" what you meant was "I'm sorry, I was wrong." That wasn't immediately obvious, you might want to rethink the clarity of your responses.

I read your post as, "Okay, maybe not polio, but they're still littered with third-world diseases (e.g. tuberculosus, malaria, and leprosy)" and the article (which is very poorly edited / organized, but that's politifact's fault, not yours) marginalizes the threat of these diseases too, in addition to polio.

Quote

[Betz] said malaria, a tropical disease spread by the anopheline mosquito, is easily treated and remains "a rare disease in Texas and not a huge problem." Leprosy, he said, is known today as Hansen's disease and "we have no more than 50 cases a year that are reported, but it's not on the rise." As for TB, the physician told the Observer, "we'll have 1,500 or so cases in Texas this year, which might be a slight increase, but we've got very effective TB-control programs in every local health department in the state."

All this crap about migrant children bringing in polio is nothing more than racist fear mongering, directed towards the ignorant and gullible.

What we do see in unvaccinated Americans traveling to developing nations and bringing back measles. We had an announcement in the spring warning every rider on BART that one of these kids was on the trains for close to a week.

Polio is still so rare, with outbreaks in a small number of places, that it's not happened, but with the vaccination rates dropping in places like Marin (where people have the money to take those $$ African safari trips), our 23 years of no transmissions may be threatened.

>So are you going to go off a general impression

Iinfrared camera (to look for fever) and simple observation (coughing etc.)

If anything seen then more intensive tests are performed.

Basically the same tests that passengers get when you arrive in Incheon airport in Seoul.

Bolas, if you would like to make this an "on topic" thread (i.e. discussion along your suggestions) then let me know and I will moderate it appropriately.

Thanks.

I'll create a new thread at a later date, copying over the parts that follow the format and try that. :)

Problem - unreliable power from renewable sources (wind, solar)

Solutions - real time pricing, smart agents, V2G (vehicle to grid) interfaces and intelligent load aggregation.

Real time pricing: Minute by minute (eventually second by second) pricing for power that customers can sign up for.

Smart agents: Local intelligence that implements a user's desired power-purchase algorithm.

V2G: Interfaces between hybrid/EV cars and the grid that allow transfer of power in both directions..

Intelligent load aggregation - aggregation of sheddable load that allows a utility to count such loads towards its generation margin requirements.

Problem: Insanely intentionally complicated tax code.

Solution: Go back to a graduated tax rate with 0 deductions. One pays a set percentage of their income. No more corporate taxes as they just get passed on anyways but also no more corporate welfare/grants.

Total income minus expenses? Or every dollar that comes in no matter what the expenses are? Applied to both people and businesses?

(the above is a good suggestion I think, but I would want to see a poverty cutout - "a set percentage of what you make above the poverty line.")

I disagree that corporate taxes should be eliminated. Corporations take profits, it's not a zero-sum game. Also, corporations benefit from the common services the government provides, so they should help pay for them. After all, corporations are people, too.:S

true, you could BUY a lot of votes by where you claim you want to set that limit - Candidate A wants it at this $$ amount, Candidate B wants it at that amount +a small amount

eventually that $$ amount will equate to approximately 50% of the population and then they will want subsidies and the others will will be the filthy rich selfish whiners

wouldn't it be smarter to just tax all the dollars - the base poverty wage will increase until people can feed their families including paying the tax (if only the gov would stop fiddling with it and trying to fix it before it naturally settles into the right amount)

Instead of a base income, I'd rather see no tax on food and clothing - you can only buy so much and it's less easily and apparently manipulated for political points

What if the profits are never paid out? WidgetWorld executives would take no salary, just stocks and corporate provided food, lodging, and business related expenses. No taxes are ever paid. Small business owners would do the same thing. No salary, but all my living expenses become corporate expenses.

In fact, wages would go down across the board, but employees could use chits to buy things they need at the company store. Everyone benefits, the employees pay less tax, and the company has a new profit center.

I think you'll get a lot of unintended consequences by saying only individual wages/salary gets taxed.

How many small businesses already play that tune. Of course they need that new lifted 4x4 F450 pickup truck for that construction business.

Just incorporate yourself and work as an independent contractor for the company. There simply wouldn't be any employment income left.
