quade 4 #2 August 20, 2014 I can not in my wildest imagination believe any other racial slur as team name would be tolerated. I find it sort of amazing this one has stood as long as it has.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
stayhigh 2 #3 August 20, 2014 Like Phil Simms says, I never gave a thought about it and after that I really think that they should change the name. They can keep the logo but they do need to change the name. People would be outraged if there were a team named, Atlanta Negros, or San Francisco 49 Chinks.Bernie Sanders for President 2016

billvon 3,058 #6 August 20, 2014 >People would be outraged if there were a team named, Atlanta Negros, or San >Francisco 49 Chinks. I know! The term 49er has some very negative connotations for miners; it portrays them all as greedy, lawless and unthinkingly hasty. And of course there are books like this that need to be banned, or at least retitled: http://www.amazon.com/Chink-Armor-J-f-Arias/dp/1933204230

I've always wondered how the San Diego Padres have avoided controversy, perhaps if durning very close games, the whole stadium was chanting "Our father's" or "Hail Mary's" while dressed as priests and nuns, there may be a bit of an uproar. DanG 1 #12 August 20, 2014 I've said it a thousand times before, and it looks like I'll have to say in a thousand more times. There's a huge difference between team name referencing a tribe of Native Americans, and a team name that references Native Americans as a whole using a racial pejorative. Why is this so hard to understand? - Dan G

Andy9o8 2 #15 August 20, 2014 Ditka can go suck it. Mike Carey, longtime NFL referee, avoided Washington’s games because of the name Former NFL Referee Mike Carey Avoided Officiating Redskins Games over Nickname QuoteSaid Carey, “I know that if a team had a derogatory name for African Americans, I would help those who helped extinguish that name. I have quite a few friends who are Native Americans. And even if I didn’t have Native American friends, the name of the team is disrespectful.” The embarrassingly strident defense by Snyder and the team as the controversy has mushroomed the past 18 months, including the flimsy claim that a lack of consensus in Indian country on whether it is offensive should enable the owner to keep co-opting and misrepresenting a people’s identity, clearly draws Carey’s ire. “I have to say the popularity contest is not an issue,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how many people don’t like it. It is disrespectful and I will not use it.”

wayneflorida 0 #17 August 20, 2014 normiss Plenty more to work on! I'm so shamed. My HS Choctawhatchee Indians are on that list. And it was worse when I played because the defense team were the "Savages" and the offensive team were the "Renagades".

billvon 3,058 #24 August 20, 2014 >If they name a team the "Redneck Crackas", the stadium would be filled every >weekend. They better order enough beer. Well, "beer" perhaps is the wrong term for what you would need to keep on hand. Keystone, Genesee Cream Ale, Schlitz etc would certainly be in demand, though. quade 4 #25 August 20, 2014 Rick ***the rednecks are leading the poll was that a racial slur ? No. It is not. "Redneck" refers to a bandana (an article of clothing) tied around a person's neck. Union coalminers to be specific. The meaning has morphed and been co-opted by people like Jeff Foxworthy unclear on its origins, but it's not a racial slur.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
