normiss 798 #384 October 24, 2014 I think that every time I hear "assault weapon". Generally the person using that term has no idea what one is. Fatal tiger attacks on humans in the U.S.: approx. 1.5 reported per annum. Fatal attacks on humans in U.S. in which a legally registered machine gun was used : 2 reported cases total since 1934. It would appear a ban on tigers would better serve the populace.

wmw999 2,444 #388 October 24, 2014 Every one who's worried about this should immediately donate $10.00 or more to some charity fighting it at it's source. That'll do more good than any amount of being pissed or scared. Someone wrote that in to the local paper. It's brilliant. Not much more expensive than the daily mocha latte. Andy9o8 2 #389 October 24, 2014 kelpdiveryou realize you listed a number of banana republics and one first world nation? Do you really want us to follow Haiti's example on ANYTHING? To me as a layperson, the banana republics' bans seems to make some sense: they know they don't have first-class, or even second-class, medical infrastructures in their countries, so they've probably concluded that, patient-for-patient, someone with Ebola entering their country probably poses more of a public health hazard than the same person entering a First-World country. kelpdiver 2 #393 October 24, 2014 normiss Fatal tiger attacks on humans in the U.S.: approx. 1.5 reported per annum. The tigers are getting that much meat? There was a well publicized event at the San Francisco zoo a few years ago when a few drunk idiots harassed the tigers and one demonstrated that the walls weren't tall enough, killed one and mauled the other two. Sadly, it was killed, and it killed the least offending of the 3. The other two got a pretty nice payout, but proceeded to litter the news with felony arrests every 12 months. In any event, that's the only fatality I knew about in the US.
jakee 1,489 #394 October 24, 2014 A quick search found a source that said there were 7 fatalities and 60 attacks over a 3 year period they examined over the late '90s. The key is that there are a surprisingly large number of tigers in the US held in private collections or kept as pets. Anything to do with them (both in terms of attacks on people or substandard living conditions) would attract far less press attention than with zoo animals.Do you want to have an ideagasm? Phang has been released from the hospital (met the President), Vinson is still in the hospital. I heard on NPR tonight that Vinson has hired a lawyer. Perhaps because she was vilified by the spokesman from the CDC, who criticized her for travelling, and later had to retract that and apologize after it was revealed that she had consulted the CDC before the travel and was told it was ok. I don't know if she expects to have to deal with the aftermath of the panic (airplane disinfection, school closings ect) or plans on a "defamation" lawsuit."There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." muff528 3 #397 October 25, 2014 Here are a couple of interesting links for anyone who has an interest in the virus itself. Kinda fascinating (to me, at least.) http://www.msdsonline.com/resources/msds-resources/free-safety-data-sheet-index/ebola-virus.aspx This article has been out since 2010 so some info may be outdated. Also, it talks about several variations of the virus so maybe not all info relates to all types. Standouts: "INFECTIOUS DOSE: 1 – 10 aerosolized organisms are sufficient to cause infection in humans." "SURVIVAL OUTSIDE HOST: The virus can survive in liquid or dried material for a number of days. Infectivity is found to be stable at room temperature or at 4°C for several days, and indefinitely stable at -70°C. Infectivity can be preserved by lyophilisation (freeze-drying)." "PRIMARY HAZARDS: Accidental parenteral inoculation, respiratory exposure to infectious aerosols and droplets, and/or direct contact with broken skin or mucous membranes." http://www.buffalo.edu/news/releases/2010/06/11494.html Looks like it's been around a while. ..maybe even since the advent of mammals, and may have played some role in mammalian evolution. kallend 2,026 #400 October 25, 2014 IagoYou are correct. I've been to Haiti. If ebola got a foothold there it would be cholera all over again. However, assuming we DON'T have to do something similar simply because we have first world facilities is also foolhardy. So the gun lobby tells us that "assault weapons" are so rarely used in crimes that we shouldn't worry about them. More Americans have been killed with "assault weapons" in the last 48 hours than have died of ebola in the USA in the last 2 months. By NRA logic, ebola is nothing to worry about.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
