wmw999 2,452 #89 November 21, 2014 One thing about being a second-term president is that you have no political future to talk about -- you've already achieved it. So maybe a personal sacrifice to get something moving is at least one approach. I'm not particularly in favor of all the executive action, but dang -- congress has done damn all about most everything. In the same spirit that I voted for Ross Perot in 1992 (he'd've pissed off everyone ), I kind of like congress being goosed into doing something. But I much, much, would have preferred to see the Senate bill be worked and bastardized (which is what compromise always is ), than what's happened. He threw a bomb. The republicans threw a bomb with the shutdown last year. Seems like a silly way to govern, from both sides, doesn't it? Wendy P. wmw999 2,452 #94 November 21, 2014 Bullshit. There is lots of common ground. Saying there is none lets someone else, someone who is actually willing to define a position, define yours for you. How stupid is that? Do you think we liberals don't work, or pay taxes, or breathe, or have families we love and want the best for? Do you think we want our companies to fail, and our country to be destroyed? Those are talking points by people whose measure is their radio and internet popularity, and nothing else. They spew divisive shit because it gets people fired up, just like asking about the Yankees when in Boston. Designed to piss people off, so they'll stick around to watch the reaction, like some people will go out of their way to look at a car wreck. wmw999 2,452 #96 November 22, 2014 The common ground was the desire to fix a system that was the leading cause of bankruptcy in the US (cite), as well as one of the leading causes of runaway costs both for counties/local districts (along with defined benefit pensions), as well as companies. I'm not including things like hurricanes etc, because those aren't consistent. I don't think there are a lot of people who thought that what we had was just fine. I don't think there are a lot of people who think that ACA is the right answer. But sometimes it's easier to change what's there and wrong, than it is to put something out there. Remember the BB training, and the whole "perfect is the enemy of good enough?" Well, that works for legislation, as well. I'm not saying we're on the same page. But to say there is nothing in common is bullshit, just as much as saying that there's everything in common, or that common ground will always be good enough to settle on. Is it better to try to actually change things in a way that will get more people cooperating, or to just ram it through when you have the power, and then be pissed off when people don't obey?
