Thats exactly what I thought when he said the part about voting again I was shocked that he would say that and thought it was a poor joke, then when he said it wouldn't hurt anything, I was like no way he just said that. It's like telling a racial or Jewish or queer joke, and having people laugh at it, and then following it with another one. AND being caught on camera. It's really stupid, and should cost him.

But just as laughing at a racial or Jewish or queer joke doesn't really mean that you're incredibly racist or anti-semitic or homophobic (or whatever), laughing at a "vote early, vote often" joke doesn't really mean that you approve of actually doing so.

Remember never to ascribe to malice that which can be attributed to stupidity. When former Houston mayor Louie Welch said to "shoot the queers" in response to a question about AIDS, no one thought he really wanted to do that, or that he thought it was a reasonable answer. It was stupid, it was caught on live mike, and it pretty much ended his political career.

I'm a liberal. I joke about voting early and voting often. If you've heard me say it, you probably didn't think I meant it, because I'm a jumper, and you'd be hearing it at a DZ, where you wouldn't take it seriously. Just remember that every situation you read about has as much context around it. Might be relevant, might not be. But every situation has more to it than meets the eye.

Turning your opponents into cartoons in order to "clarify" things doesn't clarify anything but your unwillingness to treat them as individual human beings. And finding ways to make people you disagree with into opponents marks you as a tool of people whose radio and TV ratings depend on getting people pissed off.

This doesn't go just for you, AB -- it goes for all the people, on both sides, who jump up and down and go "hell yeah" when someone on "their" side "scores a point against the others." A discussion should be about enlightening yourself, not point-scoring against the other guy. You can't control him, you can control what you decide to try to understand.
