Killed by Police

It's unreal what cops deal with.

Yes it is. They face life and death every single day they leave their home. And for peanuts.

Then they have to come home and keep that all inside so they can try to have normal healthy relationships with their spouse and children but how do you do that after you have just left the scene of a drunk driver that killed a whole family or had to take malnourished kids away from a crack mother or arrested the grandpa for abusing his granddaugthers and it took everything you have to not put a bullet in the mans head.

Yeah fuck the police. Who needs them....What do we want! Dead Cops...

Merry Christmas...

When something good is happening, no one is going to say “quick, call the police”. Yes, they see and deal with the worst that society has to offer – but that is their job and what they signed up to do. Regarding pay and job security, for a role which generally requires no formal education, they are surprising well paid. Google what a New York or Chicago policeman is paid in salary and pension. In your standard issue small hick town , they can be among the top earners.

Everyone respects and applauds policemen who go about their role professionally, but in many parts of the US, there are departments (or whole cities) where the police are corrupt or racist. That is a problem to be addressed and dealt with; not justified.

No formal education??? That explains a lot!

Where I live, it needs (after good school graduation, depending on scheduled career in police department): 3 yrs of dual studies (including practice time), ending with a BoA. After that, starting with 4 yrs of 'basic time (f.e. readiness for service)'.

What are prerequisites for them US cops? (OK, I'll google) ...

It seems :S at first blush - but if you stop & think about it, many employers decline applicants who they think are over-qualified for particular positions, for basically the same reason: to avoid too high a risk of rapid voluntary turnover.

Well, as the Republicans like to tell us over and over when dealing with the minimum wage, if people don't like their working conditions and remuneration, maybe they should look for another line of work.

The numbers, however, are quite real, and the number of cops shot by civilians is also absurdly high. Especially when compared with other developed nations (even after taking population into account).

The numbers in the US are incredibly far out of line but there seems to a level of acceptance that I find difficult to understand.

-An officer says the suspect came toward him with a metal object. When he ordered him to stop, he didn't.
-Michael D. Sulton was the man involved in a Madison County carjacking that ended in gunfire, and with his death.
We've also learned that, back in October, Jackson police named Sulton as a suspect in the armed robbery and shooting of 58-year-old Lamar Joseph.

If it were only that easy I would have left years ago. Its not like you have a 401k you can just take with you. Your money goes into a fund that everyone shares from. In most departments if you leave before retirement you loose everything but the little bit you put in.

In our system you get 3.3% of your max salary for every year of work. You can take retirement if you A. Have 10 years of service(vested) and have reached the age of 65
B. Have worked 25 years and are any age.

If you leave early all you get is your contributions. Not the contributions your employer made, nor the interest your money made in the market.

In my case if I were to leave today I would get a whopping 39,000 (pre tax!) to start my retirement over at age 34. Any retirement planner will tell you your falling short to start at 34 with 31,000 and plan on retiring at 67. You would have to put in an insane percent of your income to not fall short.

When people start they are not told that information, and as a young person just entering the work force even if they were told it would not mean anything to them. Its a horrible fucking trap that has you after a certain point.

If you work 30 years you get 100% of your max salary. Thats what they end up telling you.

Dude,

I've been trying to tell you that for years...............

In all seriousness, policing in an armed society is extremely challenging. Look at the incidents, the vast, vast majority are more than justified. I know of guys who have taken rounds before they would fire back, all in the name of not getting crucified by their own administration and the media.
This is especially true now more than ever. For the foreseeable future the 24 hour news cycle will take advantage of nearly every shoot, no matter how justified, to sell ad space.

Someone who gets it.

When I was a cop in the UK some 40 years ago, it never crossed my mind that someone I approached would be armed.

The constant drumbeat of "stand your ground", "more guns less crime", "Castle Doctrine", etc. has brought us to this point. US cops have to assume anyone they approach is armed and react accordingly.

The US reaps what it sowed; an arms race between police and criminals, and a homicide rate that is by far the highest in the developed world.

Go here, and see the third chart, "Violent crime rate 1973-2010":
http://www.gallup.com/poll/150464/americans-believe-crime-worsening.aspx

The current violent crime rate is only one-third of what it was 30 years ago. And this has happened with more guns in circulation than ever, more gun owners than ever, more states allowing concealed carry than ever, and with so-called "assault weapons" legal for sale.

Conclusion? Crime must be caused by something other than guns and gun availability.

Crime is about thug culture. We should deal with the culture that makes shooting people cool and proof of how tough and respectable you are. We should deal with fatherless homes that allow kids to grow up to be thugs. We should quit using racism as an excuse for committing crime. And we should lock up every punk that commits a violent crime, irrespective of their skin color.

I also believe in 2nd amendment, it was put there for a reason.
I've talked to several cops from Europe, they all said they could never police in our environment, it would be too dangerous.
We just laughed and said there are lots of people who think we in the USA live in a police state, that made them laugh........

One decision, one town...........
Hmm...............
That must not include the 4 guys I know who have Juris Doctorate degrees, or the numerous ones who have advanced degrees, or the myriad of guys who have college degrees.
But that is seldom reported, doesn't meet the far left or right narrative.

Indeed, 30 years ago the baby boomers were in the prime years for criminal activity. Now we're geriatrics.

Fact remains that the US has roughly 4x the murder rate of other developed nations and 70% of those are with guns. Rates of other crimes are comparable, it's just murders that are way out of line.

Gun apologists like to blame "culture", yet we all watch the same violent TV, movies, and video games.

When people say "culture" they mean the rap wars, gangs, and street thug life. I have shown you this before already have you forgotten? You allegedly live in the bad part of Chicago. It's right in front of your face. What's causing the crime there? Young black males with no job pushing drugs robbing houses and shooting eachother.
