With what appears to be the imminent murder of a couple of Japanese, I find my self tired of having to look at these poor folks. Dressed in the traditional orange garb, with a slightly non descript hill as a back drop.

I really wish the media would stop showing these images, I'm a nurse, I don't mind blood and guts, but I really find myself affected by the doomed haunted look in their eyes. It seems like a great invasion of their privacy.

I have a friend who suffered a serious head injury a few years ago. Took him a couple of years to recover. He said that since he emptied his head with the injury, he makes a point of trying to fill it back up again with only good stuff.

Sounded very wise to me. So I just don't watch that stuff. If I need to I can, but my disgust and anger fuel nothing.

I just don't watch the news, personally. When I see that sort of thing I guess it doesn't really affect me much, though.

That said, I've been accused of being "cold", "heartless", a "robot" and in one notable case "a miserable cunt" so perhaps I'm not really the target audience for this question.

You left out the option for the video of the beheading itself.

Some time back I fucked up and played a video of Chechens beheading a captured Russian soldier, expecting it to be the expurgated version.

It wasn't.

I nearly threw up.

I now have absolutely no use for Chechens in any way shape or form. Same goes for any group that spawns ISIS.

If they were all to simultaneously choke on chicken bones, I would consider it to be a good thing.

Personally, I don't see any difference between being a journalists in a 3rd world country, knowing they all HATE you, and would love to extenguish your life, and jumping out of a plane knowing it could be the last sane thing you do. I've been working in Sumatra flying over the same seas and same planes that have been going missing over there near Indonesia. I gotta tell ya, landing at Moscow Int'l Airport is no picnic, I hate it.As far as traveling to the middle east, believe it or not, much more stress free. In fact, so far the only political figure I've seen who stood up and said 'hang on a minute, this guy was a fucking cunt' is an ex-MP who doesn't have to toe the party line any more. Everyone else is still in thrall. Apparently if they let us keep our military bases there it doesn't matter that they're worse than most of the people in the region that we're using those bases to attack.

You're wrong. You are a humanist and you care for others. Most people would want to associate with you.

But the average person has problems defining the politics of this situation and region.

Daesh, the current self defined name of the Islamic State directs these videos to define who they are. They clearly state their policy in public documents as well.

Like it or not, news reporting is surely a ratings game these days. Nothing draws a crowd like death, destruction and general horror, and ultimately we are creating the market for these stories.

This 'need to be informed' ideal that we hold so dear doesn't really stand up unless we're going to do something worthwhile with that information, preferably to actually try and change things. Generally speaking we don't do anything at all, and in most cases there's nothing we can do - so we just shake our heads and say what a terrible place the world is, and how evil certain groups of people are, and wait for the next developments every hour, on the hour.

I'm sorry to say I think there's a ghoulish element to most, and possibly all, of us. We're fascinated by tragedy and disaster, and if we weren't those stories wouldn't be featured front and centre every day.

At the same time we don't want them to be too close to home, too graphic or too personal. The beheadings are all of the above, so we're drawn to those reports and at the same time made uncomfortable by both our own interest and the thought of what those poor people are going through.

I voted that I find the videos disturbing. There's clearly no need for them to be shown at all, but once they're out there - like the scene of the car crash you pass while you're driving - it's hard to look away.

The only beheading video I ever watched, and I hope to never see another one again, was Daniel Berg's. Just watching Al Zarqawi pull out his knife, grab Daniel's head and start carving with Daniel's gurgling screams and then holding his severed head up to the camera... really gave me a sickening feeling in my stomach. I've seen plenty of fucked up shit and lots of dead bodies, but that act of killing was just savage.

FUCK ISIS and all their stupid motherfuckers. May they be wiped off the face of the earth and burn in hell.
