Part of President Barack Obama’s ambitious tax reform plan is a proposal to gut the popular 529 savings accounts used by millions of Americans to save for college. The administration has labeled the plans “inefficient” and complained that the benefit accrues too heavily towards higher-income Americans.

But in 2006, Obama actually voted in the U.S. Senate to make the 529 savings permanent, and has written favorably of the plans in the past.

I did, would like to see how your math works. You are the one making the claim.

Show the wealth held by the top 20% wealthiest Americans then compare that to the wealth held by the middle 60% Americans.

You take all the money held by the 20% and what would you get
One time?

More than you would get if you took all the wealth held by the middle class....one time.

Whomever it's attributable to, I like the term "higher-income Americans." It reminds me of "orange drink" or "cheesy sauce."

"Wait, are we talking about the rich? High-income?"

"Well... They have higher income..."

…then consider how much harder it is to steal, er, tax money from someone who has the means to hire a great accountant and lawyer.

I am still waiting for Rush to put some math next to his assertion.

But why do you think that Obama is so against the thing he wrote so favorably and voted for?

Probably just to piss you off.

You overestimate my importance.

So we are talking abut college savings plans here right? Good, lets get rid of all breaks on this shit....

I mean after all, it's not like we have a problem with college debt or anything like that.

Follow Obama's lead and fuck the college students!!!! :S

Well, the President wants to make community college free. Probably all college free. So if there's $200k sitting in an account for college, that money isn't needed, anymore. So the government should get it to pay for free community college.

Make sense?

A good part of it is because colleges are businesses with great marketing. Most people who went to college probably didn't need to, but because anyone on the right side of the bell curve is basically expected to have a degree at this point…

It won't be long before everyone has at least a bachelor's and they become worthless, and anything under a MA/MS is ignored just like a high school diploma is now.

I for one wish I had saved myself a tremendous amount of debt and skipped college.

Sure - 401K's are for retirement. So will government hijack those funds too to underpin Social Security?

The entire obligation from the government was that 529's accrued tax free if the gains were used on education. This is a complete breach of the intent - a total reversal. So we have to wonder, is the government itself subject to being held to contractual obligations or not?

Of course, the solid legal argument of "they got it, I want it" is compelling I'm sure. Much like the powerful - "he did it first" defense.

Successful or not, the mindset behind this proposal terrifies me.
