Well, technically, the question was "largest caliber weapon." Is a 50 cal pistol "larger" than a 338 Lapua Mag? If the question had been "biggest gun", I really couldn't have answered. I've never shot artillery. Just rifles, pistols & shotguns (plus a couple SMGs a long time ago). "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I knew one guy who got caught in the backblast of a 90mm, and the scar pattern was amazing. A bit closer and he would have had part of his torso removed in the process; as it was, he got a medevac out of the deal and well-deserved disability thereafter. keithbar 1 #41 February 9, 2015 A friend bought a 454 casull revolver .it came with a box of 45 long colt ammunition. fun gun to shoot .then he went out and got a box of full power rounds for it. it suddenly became not so fun to shoot. i have on occasion been accused of pulling low . steve1 5 #44 February 12, 2015 I was a weapons specialist in the army. We fired all kinds of old world weapons that might be considered antiques today. Anyone here ever fired a grease gun, Thompson machine gun, or BAR. I have to say I hated all three of them. The heavy weapons included recoil-less rifles, 60 and 80 mm mortars, 3.5 inch rocket launchers, and several others. I was really impressed with the 50 caliber. We fired it with tracers one day. It is truly a flat shooting weapon. I've never been a big fan of big magnum rifles for hunting but I own a 300 Win. Mag. I just bought a 7mm. Magnum. They both kick too much to be fun to shoot. Everyone says to put a muzzle break on them but the barrels are already too long in my opinion.....and they are plenty noisy enough already without a break on them. sfzombie13 324 #46 February 13, 2015 i loved my grease gun. it was an m3a1 and was my primary weapon in desert storm, along with a 1911a1. those things were cool as hell to shoot. you always held down to the left to let it walk into the target. i fired the first round in anger of desert storm with one also. i volunteered to go set up advanced camp for the bn, and we had to drag around all the demo for the company. one day, a civilian drove into our perimeter and the ncoic got ass chewed for letting it happen. that night, he told me to not under any circumstances to let anyone through without challenging them first. about an hour after dark, me and another guy saw a vehicle approaching with lights out, and we were guarding a huge pile of demo. he had an m16 and i had a grease gun, so i sent him to hide under the 5 ton to cover me. i flashed my light and they didn't stop, so i fired, point of aim down to the left. it went off once and jammed. they stopped, and one yelled at me, so i started cussing the hell out of him, i was scared to death and adrenaline was flowing hard. turns out it was a 1sg and an lt from another company. 1sg asked if my weapon was clear, and i looked down and my finger was still wrapped tight on the trigger, i hadn't let go. they tried to tell me i was supposed to fire a warning shot, and i told them i did. i also told them if the weapon hadn't jammed, one of them would be dead. they got in trouble for riding into camp like that. a couple of weeks later the 1sg drove up to my tank and tossed me a .45 round and told me good job. that was the first time any of us had any thoughts about the sand jamming magazines, so i was credited with finding and fixing a critical flaw. we cleaned mags regularly after that._________________________________________ Si hoc legere scis nimium eruditionis habes Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I guess it was used by WWII tankers to shoot out of the top of a tank without exposing yourself. I would imagine barrel life would be short with a weapon like that..... For some strange reason, a lot of German tanks didn't have "internal" machine guns. Mainly the later "Elephant" self-propelled guns. They were most commonly used to "clean off" the other tanks. The Soviet Partisans had a lot of success against German tanks with magnetic bombs and Molotov Cocktails. The magnetic bombs were partially defeated with a "stucco-like" concoction called "Zimmermit." It kept the magnets from getting close enough to the metal to stick. They came up with the curved barrel (Krummlauf) as a "better than nothing" way to shoot the Partisans off the tanks."There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
