ACLU sides with Confederate Flag bumper stickers

Recommended Posts

I don't see a problem. For one thing, the Civil war ended 150-yrs. ago this year. Citizens of this country who are from other countries fly Japanese flags, German flags, Iraqui flags, Irish flags, Mexican flags and so-on and no one bats an eye. People need to start looking forward and quit dwelling on the past.
I still don't understand why 'The Confederate Air Force', a tongue in cheek name by the forming members, had to change it to 'The Commemorative Air Force'. :S

Hi John,

Re: "Texas cannot pick and choose the plates it approves on ideological grounds."

A somewhat similar issue came up a number of years ago here in Oregon. The Oregon Supreme Court ruled that the State of Oregon owns all license plates and can 'pick and choose' as they wish.

The ACLU are not "just a bunch of liberals." This perception, however, is as a result of the individual civil liberties that republicans seem to have a hard on for infringing upon vs. those that democrats like to infringe upon, and how that lines up with the ACLU's stated opinions.

Both republicans and democrats readily crap on the fourth amendment and the ACLU is happy to combat either when they do so.

More occasionally, the first amendment gets put to the test by individuals in both parties, and the ACLU is there to fight that.

Dare I say it, but Republicans run afoul of the 14th amendment more frequently than do democrats, and in those cases, the ACLU is happy to step in.

And finally, democrats' disdain for the second amendment is written into the national party platform. When a democrat starts a sentence with "I support the second amendment, but..." it's like Dom Irrera's "With all due respect..." bit. And, in response, the ACLU's official policy is that they disagree with the SCOTUS ruling in D.C. v. Heller that said the rights outlined in the second amendment apply to an individual.

The criticism "a card carrying member of the ACLU" is heard frequently from conservatives (including GHWB in the 1988 election). I've never heard it from a liberal.

"A black Texas Democratic state senator, Royce West, said in 2011, "Ill-intended or not, why would African Americans want to be reminded of a legalized system of involuntary servitude, dehumanization, rape and mass murder?"

Double entendre?

Liberals do not refer to Frank Marshall Davis, one of BHO's early mentors, as a card carrying Communist either.
