Banning books now? The book wasn't bannable in 1971 but is now?

Way to drum up interest in the book, Senator.

oh look, a fanatical and power hungry politician that's out of touch with reality wants to control what people see, read and think.....

and expects it to work.....

nothing to see here, business as usual

At least 537 people in DC alone fit that description. Then factor in 50 state capitals.

And I live in Houston's Bay Area, just a couple of miles from Bay Area Blvd :P

Which Bay Area?

Some folks in Maryland call the environs around the Chesapeake "The Bay Area."

But I take it you're talking about the San Francisco Bay Area.

All others are pale imitations.

***Feinstein should suck-start a shotgun and log out of the world of the living.

Whoa. Steady as she goes there, pardner. Give yourself time to adjust to being back.

People who attempt censorship are among the absolute worst of humanity. If I were gullible enough to believe in hell, it's the place I'd wish them to. Feinstein is consistently awful in plenty of ways, but this is… ugh.

Streisand Effect in 3..2...1...

Feinstein. Is this a legitimate quote or is it a troll?

If it's legitimate, it has to make one wonder what universe this person is living in. I mean, 2x wrong in a single statement. Somebody tell me this is a misquote or out of context. Please.

What's your point? Every country is run by assholes? Yes, I agree. I'd like to minimize the assholery, personally.

My point is that every society should get to decide what they deem to be acceptable in their society.

Labelling those who believe child pornography should not be widely and freely available as the "absolute worst of humanity" I don't think is very fair. I also doubt you hold that opinion in that case.

Hence, we have likely already agreed that some level of censorship is acceptable. Other societies may believe that writings that call for the extermination of a race, or group should not be widely available. I also wouldn't label that as the absolute worst of humanity, though I fully understand the argument in favour of having it widely available.

Perhaps you can start by telling Feinstein's grandchildren why you want their grammy to shoot herself to death with a shotgun.

The creation of child pornography is an impingement on the life and liberty of a person without that person's consent, so it is justifiable to block it.

Political protest books, how-to manuals (including those to help people commit suicide), and books about how terrible a given group are do not qualify, in my opinion.

Sure.

"Your grandmother has dedicated her life's work to making the country a worse place. She supports murder by the state, she supports censorship by the state, and she supports violation of civil liberties in general by the state. She does not care about the right to free speech, which is one of the most important principles upon which our society is based. I don't think she should be harmed or killed by others, but if she were to kill herself she would finally do something to make the country a better place."

Except that simulated child pornography is illegal as well, so that argument isn't valid in this case.

My point remains that those who attempt censorship are nowhere near the absolute worst of humanity.

I think that simulated child pornography being illegal makes no rational sense, and don't understand why they bothered.

Your point is, like mine, a matter of opinion. Censorship is a truly horrible, evil thing as far as I'm concerned and not much is likely to change that belief.

I think it makes perfect sense. If it wasn't then prosecution would have to prove the actual act took place. It would make prosecution of possession of child pornography significantly harder.

Censoring computer generated, life like child pornography makes perfect sense.

So we should make more things illegal to make the job of cops and prosecutors easier? Gonna have to go ahead and disagree with ya there, Bob.

Better make apple juice illegal for minors to drink. Looks too much like beer.

Strawman. I didn't say that. You said it didn't make any rational sense. I outlined how it does make rational sense.

Touché. It's a terrible rationalization that I completely disagree with, but then again, people rationalize believing in all sorts of silly shit.
