These stories seldom make it past the local media level

The same situations occurred in Texas this Spring, as well as other areas of he country when needed.

The national media is surprisingly absent in running these stories of the ACTUAL use of this equipment. It doesn't fit their narrative.

There was a bunch of departments on the large news networks using Bearcats to evacuate people.

Our sheriffs office used their surplus vehicle to get kids off a school bus that was stranded when the driver drove through high water and stalled the bus out.

Again I will state that I would love to see a screenshot of your browser bookmarks. You state others are nut balls and such, but you seem to have the links for them to go visit ooh so often right at hand.

Bearcats aren't LESO 1033 items, mainly Caiman and MaxxPro MRAPS. There is still the occasional Peacekeeper and other types of armored cars.

Yeah but they sure do get some people butthurt, so I had to mention that they were being used to rescue people.

I always find it interesting that me an immigrant tends to understand what this country is about more then so many flag waving yellow ribbon wearing so called Americans who so easily trow away what made this country special. All the freedoms just so easly given up because of fear.

I won't go trough the long list of freedoms that have disappeared if you cared you should already know.

However one of the other things that makes this country such a great place or i should say another thing that WAS great. Not having a military force within our own boarders!
Anyone who is not butthurt should reevaluate their priorities.

We already lost habeas corpus, we already started to kill fellow Americans without due process, now we have an out of control police force with military style equipment. Yea i am worried specily when i see so many cops now and in the past who forget their oath and value their sense of camaraderie more then their sense of duty.

So yea most AMERICANS don't want tanks in the hands of cops.
This is the same cops that easily get mislead in to raiding and destroying people lives, these are cops that are fooled by 16 year olds. Yea i don't want people who make horrific mistakes with a 9mm to make the mistakes with a tank!

Need I say more................(rolls eyes)
This is EXACTLY why I posted this.

Please, if you are going to respond, at least try to be truthful, or at least factual.

If it makes you feel better, I agree using the term "butthurt" really brings nothing to the conversation.

***Who has a tank?

I got a couple of buddies who do...

Septic, propane, gasoline, fuel, water, live stock, I know a LOT OF PEOPLE with tanks.

How exactly is an ARMORED vehicle (with SWAT stenciled on the side) the best way for rescuing people from a flood? I can't help thinking that a couple of boats or Zodiacs would have been more appropriate. The article just describes the use of a helicopter. I think inexpensive drones could have done that job just as well.

As for media coverage, if everyone doing the job they are paid to do got written up every time they did it, we'd run out of bandwidth and paper really quickly.

When the water levels are too low for the drive of an outboard but not too high for a lifted vehicle to go in.

I was the leader of a search and rescue dive team for 10 years we had an 8 ft zodiac with a 20 Yamaha short shaft and even in high water drive mode it would occasionally chip the blades on pavement in situations like this. The 15' flat bottom with the 25 was worse.

The best thing we had around was an old Duce and a half surplus truck. It could take on a lot of water in those situations. If it was lower you walk if it was higher you take the boats.

Because it works, and works well.

Don't you teach physics? The vehicle is much heavier than a normal 5 ton truck, has equal (in some cases more) ground clearance, a capsule that can seat up to 12, and a waterproofed engine/drivetrain. I remember one Sheriff in a western state saying he could see his MRAP being used more in floods more than anything else. It's perfectly suited for shallow swift water evacs/rescues during flash floods.

It would be nice if the detractors would just say "hmm, that's pretty resourceful" and give credit where credit is due. But it won't happen if it doesn't fit your narrative. And others are the closed minded ones?

Or a Humvee, you know those big scary unarmored ones........

not to mention that this right in the middle of rural redneck SC, where everyone has a gun or 10, where BBQ and beer are a daily diet, where people of all races help each other, home of the Darlington Raceway, the "track to tough to tame" hosting the Bojangle's Southern 500, and they go to church

it's an area off I-95 between Columbia and Myrtle Beach where there is a little manufacturing and a lot of farming, hunting, fishing, and NASCAR

nothing for the media to cover: no riots, no one standing around complaining how the government caused the problem and isn't helping, the Jesse and Al Chicago thugs aren't there, the Panthers aren't there, and the kids have respect

And we like it that way - amen
Give one city to the thugs so they can all live together. I vote for Chicago where they have strict gun laws.

Land Rovers and Toyota Landcrusiers have been doing just that for generations. I still don't see the need for an ARMORED vehicle.

How about his story (that got some time on this site)

http://www.breitbart.com/big-journalism/2015/11/01/spring-valley-backlash-students-back-fired-deputy-bringbackfields-school-walkout/

Quote

Friday, hundreds of students–both black and white–at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, South Carolina walked out of class in support of Ben Fields, the Richland County sheriff’s deputy shown in a viral video forcefully removing a noncompliant student Monday.

Seems there may be more to this story that the DNC super pac media reported!

If the DoD were giving those away, you'd see PD's getting them. And sometimes they do come up on the site, if I'd see one, I'd snag it.

You don't, and that is where the "opened mindedness" isn't very open.

The vehicle has been adapted for use for which it was never really designed, but is very useful for.

In your circles that would be "thinking outside the box", by first obtaining a useful vehicle for pennies on the dollar. Then using that vehicle in a manner which benefits the community they serve.
