Public Health Hazard

Recommended Posts

Utah has declared porn a public health hazard, calling it potentially biologically addictive and linking it to infidelity.

Starting to see less and less difference between those evil muslim countries who dictate what their people can and cannot see, do, or wear and the US.

I think it can be addictive, and I think it can be harmful to relationships. Key word is can, so can drinking alcohol, but we let adults make choices about its use.

But that is a personal choice made by individuals and couples.

I think it is also potentially warping when accessed by adolescents. When I was a kid getting access to that was swiping on dusty old Penthouse mags from a box in the attic. Now with the internet teenagers have much more access to some pretty degrading and rough stuff. But it is already legally restricted to being seen by viewed by 18 yo's and up. So that falls on parents to police their own children.

Sounds like nothing the government should be involved in, especially from a moral standing.

Too funny.

I just saw that story and was thinking about a guy I know that runs a work camp in northern Canada. He said in the evening the internet usage skyrockets as everyone is watching porn.

They must have poor health i guess.

Some reference for the class.

So much for the First Amendment in Utah, but the church of LDS is cool there.
Religion is a public health hazard.

I have a really good general opinion of Mormons. But generally agree about religion as hazard so some with poorly developed critical thinking skills.

So what sort of research are they basing these conclusions on?

Seriously, there have been some attempts to research this subject.
They keep running into a pretty insurmountable issue.

They can't find any adult males who have never watched any.

So how can anyone draw the conclusion that "porn is harmful" when they can't compare people who have "been harmed" to those who haven't. Yes, I know. It's religion, not science. Proof isn't necessary.

OTOH, this is simply a "declaration", with no legal standing or funding.

Just another indication that the "American Taliban" are out there trying to dictate how people live their lives.

"Rep. Carl Wimmer, R-Herriman, who worked in law enforcement, said he has never dealt with a sex offender who didn't get his start with pornography.
I'm not a huge fan of censoring the Internet, but this is definitely something to look into to see if we can stop the influx of pornography into our society, because pornography is such a plague. It's rotten to the core and it hurts families and it hurts children."

well, I have declared nosey religious fanaticism a public health hazard, pointlessly intrusive, addictive and linking it to tons of crap and violence.

I think he meant to say:

I support this declaration.

Fanaticism combined with politics sucks - I don't like people telling us what to do "for our own good". We're smart enough to make our own decisions. This is no better than legislating property ownership, what kind of light bulb to buy, or making us pay for other people's stuff.

As for 'declarations' vs legislation. Declarations are a freaking waste of time and energy. If it doesn't DO anything, then politicians are wasting our time and money just for publicity. It's the weakest form of pandering. "Hey, I'm not going to do anything, but I want to say I 'feel' something". It's right up there with declaring a month to be 'National (anything) Month'. Don't they have a library somewhere to rename?

I don't know, I'm stuck with a red left turn arrow at an intersection with no traffic.
;)

Ethan Hunt designed that intersection.

those BASTARDS -

your best bet in this situation, if someone is behind you, would be to pull forward way past the stop line - just park it in the cross walk if you can. Or, even better, stop at least an entire car length BACK from the stop line. (seeing both of these things a LOT more lately). Both bug me, but I think the 2nd one is even more annoying.

The "stopping back" is an attempt to get an arrow. They have metal detector loops in the pavement (they sense the metal in the car, not the weight of it). The traffic engineers have decided that an arrow for only one car isn't a good thing, so they set the detector back a space or two. So the impatient people stop at that spot to trigger the arrow.
Stopping well across the line (like into the crosswalk) is stupid. The car is often past the sensor, so the arrow never appears. It also makes it difficult for a semi to make a turn. They put that line where it is for a reason people!! >:(

And people aren't smart enough to make good decisions.

But it should be their right to make stupid ones, not the government's job to regulate stuff (within limits - but exactly where those limits should be is a big can of worms).

This one is common grounds. :D

as for people stopping back for the sensors....I'm not convinced, the demographics seems to match two types: timid people and obsessively oblivious texters, not traffic technology savvy people - but my personal observations are likely biased

Well, it does only really apply in left turn lanes with an "on demand" arrow. There's one of those near my mom's house. I know when it's people doing it deliberately to trip the arrow when they move up as I pull up behind them (I'm then the one activating the arrow).

But attributing it to stupid people is probably more accurate. Not sure who said it, but something to the effect of "don't give too much credit to people for clever behavior. Much of the time it's oblivious stupidity that gets lucky."

I've yet to see that. And I've watched for it. But happy to see some people think while driving. At least where you live.

Orlando still has too many timed lights.
Looong timed lights.
That let 3 cars through, then switch instantly to red because the Sun Rail is going by 2 blocks away.
Then changes 8 minutes later.
It's awesome.

A few of the municipalities are switching the left turn arrows to flashing yellow too which is interesting.
