Should prostitution be legalized and regulated?

I think this is what is happening with the legalization of pot.

Here in Oregon we are seeing the taxes on pot far exceeding anyone's expectations. We could do the same with sex for sale.

I voted for making it legal.

Well I suppose the 9 in agreement to legalize must not have daughters they love. So I suppose it's OK with them to do unto other men's daughters they would not want other men to do to their own.

What a bunch of SICK, Worthless, Individuals.

Ya, the estimated age of those entering prostitution is 12 - some even as young as 9 - but these people lie to themselves with delusions that legalization will end all that, just to keep their sick fantasy alive.

I _highly_ doubt many people on this forum are talking about legalizing child prostitution or sex slaves (aka human trafficking).

Well, of course not - they either ignore it, or are oblivious to it. The fact is that legalization expands the market and the demand for prostitutes increases. It's already been proven human trafficking inflows increase when prostitution is legalized.

Harvard Law

-Countries with legalized prostitution are associated with higher human trafficking inflows than countries where prostitution is prohibited. The scale effect of legalizing prostitution, i.e. expansion of the market, outweighs the substitution effect, where legal sex workers are favored over illegal workers. On average, countries with legalized prostitution report a greater incidence of human trafficking inflows.

-The effect of legal prostitution on human trafficking inflows is stronger in high-income countries than middle-income countries. Because trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation requires that clients in a potential destination country have sufficient purchasing power, domestic supply acts as a constraint.

-Criminalization of prostitution in Sweden resulted in the shrinking of the prostitution market and the decline of human trafficking inflows. Cross-country comparisons of Sweden with Denmark (where prostitution is decriminalized) and Germany (expanded legalization of prostitution) are consistent with the quantitative analysis, showing that trafficking inflows decreased with criminalization and increased with legalization.

So the fact remains that tho more women and children will be forced into the sex trade because of legalization, at least they'll have a more positive experience in the wonderful world of whoredom - thanks to all you sick fucks that condone this shit.

...and then they have the balls to call Trump supporters a bunch of misogynists with shit for brains.

I'm relatively certain all are talking about good old regular adult prostitution where the hookers aren't being held captive and are earning money with their bodies of their own free will.

According to some studies, that may only amount to about 5% of prostitutes, with 95% having stated that they wanted to "escape immediately."

That entire diatribe is so full of hatred and judgement it's hard to know where to start. Suffice it to say that selling sex is a nasty business, not my fantasy. And that the weakly enforced prohibition in current law is not helping women to escape if that is what they want. Once again, you assume that women are all under, or should be under, the control of men. And that only you and your kind riding in on your high horse can save them with your moral superiority.

Every single woman I've ever met who has been a hooker has quit because she was too old to be successful any longer. They all miss the money and would go back if they could. They don't want or need you to rescue them. They want and need protection from bad tricks. That what legalization is about.

I believe your attitudes toward woman's issues makes YOU a misogynist. A controlling paternalistic male misogynist.

Nah, just like one sentence. But I'm sure your hatred is justified, of course.

Your anecdotal bullshit doesn't change anything. Maybe they are just part of the 5% that like being whores.

That legal protection is going to cause more women and children to be forced into the sex trade - the studies are pretty clear on that.

You guys can keep attacking me all you want, but it ain't gonna change the facts of the studies that you continue to ignore.

You're just too emotionally attached, so your judgement on me is of little import. Just listen to yourself - you want your prostitute friends to be protected at the expense of more innocent people being forced into the sex trade.

That's not how you protect people.

Prostitution among consenting adults should be legal. Kidnapping, child abuse, and sexual assault are already illegal and should remain so.

The challenge, and the primary non emotional argument used by those opposing, is that legalization gives cover to these criminal acts. And is there action that can be taken for the murky cases of indentured servitude? Particularly when the women in question are immigrating illegally, they aren't in a position to bear witness - it's keep hooking, or get deported.

Same has been happening to nannies and maids, should we make that illegal to?

If you make prostitution legal, there will still be a criminal element that will operate in that industry, but it will be greatly reduced.

I think the correct approach here is a combination of the approaches of countries that legalize it and some countries that make it a crime for the customer.

I think it should be legalized and regulated BUT any customer who chooses to hire a prostitute working OUTSIDE of the legal industry should be punished very heavily. The prostitute herself would not be punished, though.

The thinking here is that if you make it legal and regulate it, then any prostitute still working outside of the legal industry is likely being abused in some manner. In this way you divvy up the customers who are willing to pay for the legal prostitutes who have certain rights (and hence probably cost a bit more) and the customers who are willing to tolerate the abuse of women to save a few bucks. The latter group should--as I said--face heavy penalties.

Wow, really? That's how you justify legalizing prostitution, by comparing the rape and sexual exploitation of girls to that of nannies and maids?

The biggest criminal element in that industry is human trafficking, raking in 32 billion dollars a year in the U.S alone. I've already posted links to studies comparing over 150 countries that show how legalized prostitution expands the market and increases human trafficking inflows - how do you people justify that - or do you just ignore it?

Did you actually read the entire article that you linked?

From it:

Quote

“The likely negative consequences of legalised prostitution on a country’s inflows of human trafficking might be seen to support those who argue in favour of banning prostitution, thereby reducing the flows of trafficking,” the researchers state. “However, such a line of argumentation overlooks potential benefits that the legalisation of prostitution might have on those employed in the industry. Working conditions could be substantially improved for prostitutes — at least those legally employed — if prostitution is legalised. Prohibiting prostitution also raises tricky ‘freedom of choice’ issues concerning both the potential suppliers and clients of prostitution services.”

Yes I did, which is why in post #28 I said:

"So the fact remains that tho more women and children will be forced into the sex trade because of legalization, at least they'll have a more positive experience in the wonderful world of whoredom."

The positives of a "better" working environment for prostitutes is no justification for the increase in the amount of girls that will be forced into the sex trade to satisfy the demand of an expanding market due to legalization.

Try again.

Absolutely.

It's already legal but regulated to give sex away for free and legal to pay for sex as long as it's recorded, so why the hang ups over non recorded sex for money?

Intellectually, I am horrified at the thought that an adult woman should be "protected" from herself, and allowed only to give sex away regardless of what she wishes.

On the other hand, human trafficking involves victims, commonly young, and often illegally so. If legalized prostitution does, in fact increase trafficking, (two studies don't really prove it, but they do suggest), then a cost-benefit has to include the trafficking in the equation.

As a woman, I don't find the victimization of women to be any more awful than the victimization of men. We are all human beings. But children do deserve protection, and young people, even of (marginal) age, deserve at least some consideration of their lesser experience, and greater attractiveness to predators.

So I'm in favor of its being legal, but in a society where humans are simply another product owned by others, or women are viewed by a significant number of people as chattel, maybe not.

I would be in favor of a society where women can be prostitutes of their own volition and choice, with rules and regulations in place of course, plus health care for them provided by the brothel if they work for one as a contractor.

I do not agree with forced servitude or controlling pimped businesses. And there should be a minimum age as well. 18 or up.

...and the answer should still be a resounding "NO."

We still see increased human trafficking inflows even in countries where it is regulated - especially in democratic countries with higher incomes.

From the study:
"The type of legalization of prostitution does not matter — it only matters whether prostitution is legal or not...

Legalization of prostitution itself is more important in explaining human trafficking than the type of legalization."

...but there's no money in that, and therefore doesn't increase human trafficking inflows. In fact, if all sex was free, the traffickers would be out of business.

I suppose that if you want safe, legal prostitution one could just stick with good old fashioned gold-digging.

The legality and demand for pornography are also driving factors of sex-trafficking. Many of these women are transferred from one strip club to the next and are pornographed for distribution on the internet.

You have to understand that strip clubs, pornography, prostitution and the sex trade are all part of the same dysfunctional family - and those that support it are part of that dysfunction even if they "mean well" in their support of legalized prostitution.

We all know what they say about "good intentions."

Yes, countries that have recently criminalized prostitution have seen a decrease in human trafficking.

For the most part, prostitution in the U.S has always been illegal. The evidence suggests that legalization will make the problem even worse despite the truthiness of the opposite.

Intellectually, I am horrified at the thought that an adult woman should be "protected" from herself, and allowed only to give sex away regardless of what she wishes.

I suppose I'm having a hard time understanding why the consequences of voluntarily engaging in such risky and depraved behavior should be pawned off on even more people that will be involuntarily forced into the sex trade because of legalization, just as the empirical data strongly suggests - along with common sense and a basic understanding of supply and demand in an expanding market.

In a sense, legalization is "protecting a woman from herself" at the expense of the innocent.

wmw999

human trafficking involves victims, commonly young, and often illegally so. If legalized prostitution does, in fact increase trafficking, (two studies don't really prove it, but they do suggest), then a cost-benefit has to include the trafficking in the equation.

There is certainly room for more research, but the numbers don't lie and the evidence strongly suggests the increase of human trafficking amid legalization.

If the study showed that that legalization actually decreased sex-trafficking inflows, practically everyone in here would be circle-jerking each other with one hand and slapping hi-fives with the over - and anyone that ignored the data or dared to challenge it would be called delusional and a denier.

wmw999
