Dude, it's only funny when you're not the target, or when both the teller and the listener share. It's not funny when it's the one with the power saying "suck it up" to the one with less power.

How funny would an affirmative action joke be if you'd been laid off and you thought it was for demographic reasons? Especially if it was the junior guy who was still working?

It comes to mind that an afghani converted to Christianity a few years ago. He escaped the death penalty, which is the prescribed penalty by law for rejecting islam, by receiving asylum in italy.

Seems a little less tolerant than the big ol nasty USA.

White and Christian are identities. The Founders based this country on ideas. Among others, those iseas are democracy, capitalism, liberty, equality, and secularism. Those ideas are what make America great. The racial and religious identities of the Founding Fathers aren't.

Does the preference and appreciation of our culture over other cultures that are demonstrably less tolerant, more misogynistic, homophobic, racist and violent make us bad somehow?

This. Look at the results of Sweden's open door policy, and take another look at the effects of Japan's religious/immigration restrictions, you would know that liberalism had failed at the most fundamental levels. Me, non-American, non-white (Asian/Slavic), been in the States legally for decades, have gone to the most conservative and the most liberal places in America. In the end, only my republican friends treated me like a FRIEND. And i got called a racist, being taken the piss out of and criticised for my personal beliefs the first time ever in Cali just because I agreed with Trump... ROTF haha Miss the old days back in Montana.
