Even though this thread has become an echo chamber I'm pointing out how that statement regarding the drought or the above discussion of famine are spoken in a way that ignores the big picture. "It's important to note that California's drought, while extreme, is not an uncommon occurrence for the state," said Richard Seager, the report's lead author and professor with Columbia University's Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory. The report was sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The report did not appear in a peer-reviewed journal but was reviewed by other NOAA scientists. "In fact, multiyear droughts appear regularly in the state's climate record, and it's a safe bet that a similar event will happen again," he said. California's Ongoing Drought Linked To Climate Changev 9/29/14 QuoteUsing a sophisticated combination of computer simulations and statistical techniques, scientists at Stanford University have shown that the extreme atmospheric conditions associated with California's lengthy drought are likely caused by today's global warming conditions. kallend 2,027 #470 April 11, 2017 For the second time in just 12 months, scientists have recorded severe coral bleaching across huge tracts of the Great Barrier Reef after completing aerial surveys along its entire length. In 2016, bleaching was most severe in the northern third of the Reef, while one year on, the middle third has experienced the most intense coral bleaching. “The combined impact of this back-to-back bleaching stretches for 1,500 km (900 miles), leaving only the southern third unscathed,” says Prof. Terry Hughes, Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, who undertook the aerial surveys in both 2016 and 2017. “The bleaching is caused by record-breaking temperatures driven by global warming. This year, 2017, we are seeing mass bleaching, even without the assistance of El Niño conditions.”... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one. I can't even! OK...let me make it a bit more simple. Which of the two stories, both within 24 hours of each other is to be believed? Neither at face value. You need to look at who wrote it and why they wrote it. What is the author's background and who pays them, is it a peer reviewed article, are they espousing theory? Did you read the second article or just copy and paste the title and first paragraph (http://io9.gizmodo.com/californias-ongoing-drought-linked-to-climate-change-1640398500)? Yes the headline is a catchy "Climate Change Caused X" but the article states that the results of their study are that Global Warming causes MORE of the events that caused the drought, not that it caused THE drought.
