Unless you believe women must always wear skirts walk signals are already gender neutral. What a waste this is.Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Maybe there was a misunderstanding, and those symbols were really intended for the Scottish market."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. mistercwood 287 #5 March 8, 2017 Since the article didn't specify, it's worth noting that any future roll out will only be as and when existing lights come up for repair/replacement based on normal life-cycle. So in terms of resource and time expenditure it's negligible. Sometimes it's worth taking the little wins, doesn't mean the big targets are being ignored. You are playing chicken with a planet - you can't dodge and planets don't blink. Act accordingly. My main point is that the very symbol used, showing a figure obviously in a skirt, is sexist in and of itself. Even though it is universal.Always remember the brave children who died defending your right to bear arms. Freedom is not free.
mistercwood 287 #7 March 8, 2017 That's a fair argument, and not one that's lost on me.You are playing chicken with a planet - you can't dodge and planets don't blink. Act accordingly.
SethInMI 174 #8 March 8, 2017 Without looking into it online, my guess is the argument for the change would be that although the standard walking figure is gender neutral in principle, in practice most people would instantly assume it was male. In most of the world a similar figure marks the men's restroom for example. So I assume that unconscious gender assignment is what the initiative is trying to work against. It's flare not flair, brakes not breaks, bridle not bridal, "could NOT care less" not "could care less".
