The reporter asked Gianforte if he had a response to the newly released Congressional Budget Office report on the American Health Care Act.

As to why? The reporter's paper did a piece on Gianforte's ties to Russian companies.

Aaaand - the apologists are here. "Look, I'm not saying it's OK, but she probably deserved it."

Not what I said at all. Look, he's probably an anger management poster boy, but i still haven't heard more than 10 seconds of the encounter prior to the body slam.

And for the record, if someone said that about my mom, right or wrong is out the window. They'd need to see a dentist.

If you are not trying to justify his actions, then who does it matter what was said 60 seconds before the attack?

We have a pretty clear motive - the reporter printed something uncomfortable about him weeks before the attack. And that doesn't justify it either,

In middle school maybe. But this is a grown man. And not just a grown man, but a professional politician. If a "Your mom" comment could incite him to violence then he's not the man for the job. Not even close.

GOP candidate Greg Gianforte has financial ties to US-sanctioned Russian companies

Republican candidate body-slams Guardian reporter in Montana

A Republican congressional candidate has financial ties to a number of Russian companies that have been sanctioned by the US, the Guardian has learned.

Greg Gianforte, who is the GOP standard bearer in the upcoming special election in Montana, owns just under $250,000 in shares in two index funds that are invested in the Russian economy to match its overall performance.

According to a financial disclosure filed with the clerk of the House of Representatives, the Montana tech mogul owns almost $150,000 worth of shares in VanEck Vectors Russia ETF and $92,400 in the IShares MSCF Russia ETF fund. Both are indexed to the Russian equities market and have significant holdings in companies such as Gazprom and Rosneft that came under US sanctions in the aftermath of the Russian invasion of the Crimea.

The holdings, while substantial, make up only a small portion of Gianforte’s wealth. The congressional candidate, who made a fortune starting a software company which was later sold to Oracle, has assets estimated to be worth between $65m and $315m, according to his financial disclosure.

Absent a professional setting sometimes someone needs to be shown what happens if they try to treat you like a little bitch.

This is all getting very hypothetical as our range of settings is everywhere from this guys' interview to me reppin' my turf on the mean streets of Richmond, VA.

Classic example of alt facts. Not denying he owns shares of the fund, but do you honestly believe a guy with that net worth is sitting down daily at his computer and logging in to his Scottrade account? He has accountants and advisors who handle that. Of course that doesn't matter to the media. It's a simple drive-by attempt to get headlines and sell advertising time. And it appears to have worked. He got PO'd and let himself go. End of story. His political career is over.

With his net worth I'm certain he won't lose a bunch of sleep over it.

I don't get the relevance of this either. The story he wrote wasn't exactly incendiary or even relevant to how people should view him as a candidate.

Was it someone on this thread saying this is proof of their marred past? Someone who wrote another article? Did Gianforte pose this as proof that the guy has been unfairly gunning for him?

Right, and it's not that big a deal; I might have some portion of one mutual fund in a Russian company. If I were a politician I'd have to keep better track of my investments, but as you pointed out, it was probably an accountant who screwed up rather than him.

It became a very big stinking deal when he retaliates against a reporter by assaulting him for that story. The GOP has a big problem with their ties to Russia, and his reaction emphasizes that problem.

Let's say some day you get to the DZ, make a few jumps and someone discovers your rig is out of date. You say "damn, sorry, I forgot to check." You might get a scolding from the DZO but that's about it. It happens.

Now let's say that you get to the DZ, make a few jumps, and then the pilot points out that your rig is out of date. So you hit him in the face, break a few of his teeth and send him to the dentist. Do you think your rig being out of date is suddenly going to become a much bigger deal to the DZO (and the other jumpers?)

Talk about "poster boy for anger management."

If you do that, you'd need a good lawyer.

Depending on how bad the damage, knocking teeth out (that's why they'd need a dentist, right?) could constitute 'great bodily injury'.

Which raises the crime to "felony assault."

What does that matter? It's clearly not a justification to assault someone, and that's the only context in which it's currently being discussed.

The incident took place on election eve I believe. He already had huge support from absentee ballots. Regardless, he's a one-termer at best.

>You think memories are that long?

I think they are - and this will help him, not hurt him. Trump has come out against the press and called them "evil" organizations who "publish lies" - they are "the enemy of the American people." He has asked his supporters to assault protesters - even offered to pay their court costs. (His supporters defended his statements.) And now in his position as president he has much more power to forgive (and encourage) such crimes.

So a lot of Trump supporters are going to see assault as a valid means of expression.

Also, keep in mind that Gianforte got a huge surge in donations (over $100K) as soon as the news broke.

He also isn't the only GOPer going after reporters. GOP state senator David Wilson hit an editor in the face when his paper ran an article critical of him. A reporter was pinned to the wall by security when he asked the FCC commissioner a question. Another reporter was arrested after yelling questions about an epidemic at the US Health Secretary. And for the most part, Trump supporters have cheered these events.

He probably will not run again. I'm guessing Congress will be a pretty boring place for an high tech millionaire.

I wonder what the right would be saying if it was a "Stand your ground" state and the reporter shot him dead.

That is a good question. Since Montana is a SYG state, IMO he would be acquitted. However, his type would never ever think of carrying a gun. So it is a moot point.

SYG is unnecessary.

Once the attacker had him on the ground and continued the attack, retreat really wasn't an option.

That's all that SYG does. It removes the "requirement for retreat" that is normally part of self defense. Without SYG, the person claiming self defense has to show that there was no reasonable way to escape the attack. FWIW, "Castle Doctrine" removes that for attacks in one's own residence.

And I gotta love Ron's broad generalization that a reporter wouldn't be the type to know how to use a gun.
About as accurate as most of his broad generalizations and prejudices.
