BIGUN 1,317 #2 July 30, 2017 He said, "Mexico will pay for the wall." He never said that they would write a check. One of the ways for Mexico to pay for the wall would be with a provision in the corporate tax-reform plan. If the corporate tax were lowered from 35 percent to 20 percent and a border adjustment tax were applied... A "VAT" something that 160 other countries already have that exempts exports while taxing imports; Mexico - with whom we have a large trade deficit of around $65 billion in 2016. So, if Mexican imports were taxed at a rate of 20 percent, the United States would raise about $13 billion a year in revenue from Mexico via the border adjustment "VAT." $1.2 Billion for the wall - $11.8 billion left over. (Just putting it out there) Having said that... I'm opposed to a physical wall (we're the Berlin Wall generation - even though some would argue it's to keep those out; rather than keep those in). I just don't like it. I think there are better physical, technological and human ways to protect our borders. Sidebar: It's no wonder other countries can afford a National Healthcare plan. The U.S. trade deficit with the rest of the world -- $500 billion last year A 20% VAT on all imports could put a dent on those needing healthcare. And, yes... there will always be a disagreement on allocation based on party affiliation. Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard. A VAT is a effective way to generate revenue for a government. But for republicans the introduction of such a broad tax, "invasive" for small business and individuals. Would be DOA without a comprehensive tax reform bill(s).
billvon 2,995 #4 July 30, 2017 >So, if Mexican imports were taxed at a rate of 20 percent, the United States would raise >about $13 billion a year in revenue from Mexico . . . . Well, since Americans would be the ones paying that tax, that would be $13 billion a year in new US taxes. (Actually less, since of course that would reduce sales of Mexican goods.) But if Trump takes a more "they will pay figuratively and/or indirectly" approach, there are lots of ways to pull that off. Just badmouth Mexico regularly, and assume each verbal putdown costs them $100 million in GDP since other countries won't do as much trade with them based on Trump's disapproval. Do that 130 times and you've "paid" for the wall. Or cut taxes by $13 billion and claim that since everyone has more money, that's $13 billion that the US has and Mexico doesn't, and that that pays for the wall. Or increase transient-occupancy taxes on Mexicans by $13 billion. And when the Supreme Court shoots that down, increase transient-occupancy on everyone by $26 billion and assume that half of hotel goers will be Mexican. JerryBaumchen 1,364 #8 July 30, 2017 Hi Bill, QuoteActually less, since of course that would reduce sales of Mexican [any ] goods.) This is the part that always astounds me. Every time I read about how a tax will bring such & such money, no one seems to understand that any tax will reduce the amount of goods sold. This goes on at all levels of gov't. Now, as to the converse: Oregon has garnered three times the taxes that were predicted from the sale of recreational pot. Hmmmmmmm, Jerry Baumchen

Sure, but once the punitive import duty has destroyed the Mexican economy you'll be damn glad you've got that wall to stop the flood of extra immigrants. It's a perfect plan, really.Do you want to have an ideagasm?
BIGUN 1,317 #10 July 30, 2017 Hi, Jerry. From what I understand; the border adjustment tax is still getting kicked around, but it's highly unlikely to get any traction for the reasons Bill stated. "Simply put, any policy proposal which drives up costs of Corona, tequila, or margaritas is a big-time bad idea. Mucho Sad." ~Senator Lindsey Graham Tweet. normiss 801 #11 July 30, 2017 Or Ford, Cadillacs and Dodge cars, or most TV's, or avocados, or toothpaste, Gulfstream and Lear Jet components and entire aircraft, tires, high end audio components, printers and inks, guitars, concrete, footwear, food, engines, sporting goods, clothing, toys, tools, bicycles, consumer electronics, lighting, electrical components to name but a handful of products. No biggie. Given the expected 20-40% increase in healthcare, unknown tax increases, and import levies, we can afford it; after all, we ARE Americans!
