National Anthem Protest

Recommended Posts

The whole stunt with Mike Pence cost us as taxpayers quite a lot of money. He was originally in Las Vegas to start the day so they flew Air Force 2 from Vegas to Indy with the full crew, all the Secret Service and the needed military components (multiple C5's worth of gear) all the way across the country and then told the Press pool following him to stay in the van since they knew he was not going to be there that long. He had dinner meetings in Las Angeles that evening so he actually had a very short window to get back to the airport and fly all the way back across the country to get to his scheduled meetings. The whole thing was a publicity stunt to drive up attention for his base and to distract from the other things going on right now. There was another round of white supremacy rally's in VA over the weekend, Donald Jr got into an twitter fight over the late night shows taking cracks at his dad, President Trump was attacking GOP senators on twitter and they responded by calling the White House and "Adult Day Care center", North Korea is said to be prepping a launch of a long range missile showcasing distance and not altitude working on reentry accuracy, Puerto Rico is still a disaster, a Hurricane was making landfall in the Gulf, news reports were coming out that Trumps overseas golf courses in Scotland lost 25 million last year and were getting close to bankruptcy, and this was a really great distraction from the other negative things that could have been in the headlines.

One thing the Trump administration does very well is control what the top story is going to be at almost all times, any time that it starts to go off plan they create a new story or crisis to push to distract from the other issues. Its basically running from one crisis to the next so that people forget about the original crisis.
Yesterday is history
And tomorrow is a mystery

I wish the headlines on this read 'Mike Pence disrespects soldiers by cynically invoking their names in cheap political stunt.':|

and this would be the fake news you so love.......
It would be the truth.

The walkout was premeditated. The VP went to the game specifically so that he could leave the game. This is true.

The military does not own the national flag or have any special rights to it. Even if you accept the concept that the players are disrespecting the flag by kneeling, it is entirely false to suggest that they are intending to disrespect the military as well. Soldiers have nothing to do with their cause, and Mike Pence knows this.

So when Mike Pence pretends that he is standing up for soldiers when he's actually just using them to pluck people's emotions and score cheap political points that is real disrespect.

Sorry
There are many things these people do to cost us a lot of money

Selective outrage about a particular incident is fake at best......

Then Mike Pence must have been mind reading when he said that the players were disrespecting soldiers.

Do you think Mike Pence can read minds?

No? Ok then, so he didn't know that the players were disrespecting soldiers, so he was trying to score political points by mentioning them, so my point still stands.

It actually started with Martin Luther King Jr taking a knee, unsurprisingly for the exact same reasons.

It's very disappointing to see people that think of themselves as "patriots" despise those that exercise their constitutional rights - in this current protest thing, it's clearly racism from those that oppose the protest.

On the bolded part how so? I don't like their method of protest but they certainly have a right to do it. I just don't see the racist component with disagreeing with it.

It tends to come across as the white guys can have the second amendment but the black guys don't dare exercise their first amendment rights.
Especially after the Pence bullshit.

I'm curious what happens next when they still take a knee, get benched or fired, then sue for a civil rights violation and/or constitutional rights challenge.

Not that I seriously watch much pro football anyway...but still...most of their multi-billion dollar private business stadiums are publicly funded to some extent - so I'm curious what the financial impact will be.

I also don't much prefer their choice of protest, but that is their right. I'm completely in support of constitutional rights for everyone. Everyone.

Thanks for that. I knew it was a publicity stunt. But the behind the scene waste just to allow Pence to pander to trump and his base. Is frankly stupid.

The whole fight between trump and these protests is a tempest in a teapot. All part of the trump need for drama, distraction from the Russia investigation and appealing to the trump base.

Well, there has been a lot of "disrespect" for the flag and the SSB for a long time. Usually because it's too much bother to stand, or because people are too busy doing other things.

For example, while the people in the stands may have been standing during the SSB, everyone inside the stadium was just going about their business. Everyone in the parking lot was busy partying. Team owners and their entourages were up in their luxury boxes, doing whatever. And at any given NASCAR race, the drivers and crew would be very busy getting ready for the race. They wouldn't bother standing with their hands over their hearts during the SSB.

Colin Kapernick sat during the SSB twice without anyone even noticing. Yet once it became known that a black man was doing this, everyone lost their mind.

I think the racist angle is a stretch. No one I know has said anything about the color of the protesters just the fact that in their eyes the flag is being disrespected.

Of course as far as I know I don't hang out with racists so maybe I am out of the loop.

The NFLPA has already been clear on the matter.

A fuller discussion in the Dallas News
https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/dallas-cowboys/cowboys/2017/10/08/cowboys-owner-jerry-jones-player-disrespects-flag-allowed-play?f=r

With reference to Ron's post also. Jerry Jones might bench a player who disrespects the flag for an entire game. BUT that player will still receive his full salary. Furthermore if the whole team does it, is Jerry Jones himself going to play?

THE NFLPA has been clear to the league. If actions are taken against a player, on this issue, they will act, in court. Motion #1 the Constitution submission #1 the contract.

Jerry Jones is pandering to trump and his supporters who are not NFL fans. But who represent themselves as fans. Behind the scenes the NFL, the NFLPA are trying to avoid the trump-drama games. To get back to football.

Well, I guess I see your point that there are those who think that "respecting the flag" is more important than standing up to injustice.

Or that those athletes should pick a 'different way" to make their protest.

And, many of them don't mention the skin color of the protesters. That would be overtly racist.

And that it's entirely possible that they would have the same reaction regardless of what color the skin of the protester was.

And, kinda like I said in the "Lord of the Flies" thread:

Not all the people opposed to these protests are racist. But it sure seems like all the racists are opposed to them.

The fire chief who called Mike Tomlin a "no good nigger" is just one example.

So just to make sure I have your latest ridiculous claim straight -

You are saying democrats have not been outraged over Trumpies wasting money on flights until now?

I think you better do one of your rapid "I'm-not-backpedaling" backpedals now . . .

I almost quoted you from the other thread "Not all Trump supporters are racist, but most racists are Trump supporters"

But agree with method or not the protests are certainly getting attention. Which is the goal in the first place. I only wish that the conversation was about what they are protesting and not how.

A back pedal would involve me backing away from or diluting my original point. Now, since I am still saying that Mike Pence disrespected soldiers by using them in a cynical political stunt... what exactly have I backed away from? I maintain that my original post is 100% correct. Pence disrespected the military.

And while Pence and Trump were setting up a political stunt and wrapping themselves in the flag, what's been going on with actual US soldiers?

3 U.S. Army special operations commandos killed in central Africa

Last Updated Oct 5, 2017 3:25 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. officials said three U.S. Army special operations commandos were killed Wednesday and two others were wounded when they came under fire in southwest Niger.

The officials said the two wounded were taken to Niamey, the capital, and are in stable condition. The officials were not authorized to discuss the incident publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity.

The officials said the commandos, who were Green Berets, were likely attacked by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb militants.

In a statement, U.S. Africa Command said the forces were with a joint U.S. and Nigerien patrol north of Niamey, near the Mali border, when they came under hostile fire.

Africa Command said the U.S. forces are in Niger to provide training and security assistance to the Nigerien Armed Forces in their efforts against violent extremists.

The White House said President Trump was notified about the attack Wednesday night as he flew aboard Air Force One from Las Vegas to Washington.

Bet we won't hear a thing about that. Too many football games to tweet about.

Excuse me

The NFL protests have NOTHING to do with the 1st Amendment.

If nothing else, when the executive branch of the federal government puts pressure on private businesses to fire employees for un-PC behaviour in taxpayer funded arenas.... then it starts to look a lot like a 1st Amendment issue even if it wasn't before.;)
