Phil1111 1,149 #3 December 31, 2017 Barriss' digital footprint suggests he was familiar with swatting. One of his Twitter handles was @SWAuTistic. The Twitter account has been suspended but CNN was able to find a cached copy of the profile that had multiple references to swatting. In a December 22 tweet, he said he was "thinking about swatting" the FBI headquarters. Two people who knew Barriss through the gaming and online community spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation in that community. One of them communicated with him after the Wichita shooting. CNN reviewed some of their messages. "I was in shock so I messaged him asking him why he'd do that," the friend told CNN. "He said it was stupid and he shouldn't have done it, but I didn't care. He's a grown man who's done this stuff before." The other friend said the Wichita call stemmed from an argument among two gamers that didn't involve Barriss or Finch. One of the gamers contacted Barriss and asked him to swat the other gamer, the friend told CNN. Barriss "was known in the gaming community for doing stuff like that," the friend said when asked why Barriss would be contacted about swatting. Barriss was arrested in 2015 for calling in fake bomb threats to CNN affiliate KABC, Glendale Police Sergeant Victor Jackson said. He received a two-year sentence. "After he got out of jail, he said he did it for attention and to be on the news but that was it. He also said he regretted it and wouldn't do it (again) but that was obviously a lie," one of the anonymous friends said of the 2015 arrest. "I think he feels powerful being able to do stupid stuff like that." http://www.cnn.com/2017/12/30/us/kansas-police-shooting-swatting/index.html
Bob_Church 7 #4 December 31, 2017 IagoPeople call in fake emergencies all the time. Sometimes they lead to tragedy. Kelley Thomas, a known homeless schizophrenic to the PD, was beaten to death in San Francisco for the heinous crime of sitting on a public bench on a sidewalk. A restaurant owner didn't want him where the patrons had to walk past, or had to look at him through the window, so called the police and said Kelley was trying to break into cars. CCTV shows that to be completely untrue and now the man is dead. If you make a fake call, or an exaggerated call because you think it will get you a faster response, you should be tacked to the the wall if it goes bad. I didn't know that aspect of it. Damn. And there's also the way it could undermine an important system. All it takes is one politician who wants to make a name for themself by introducing legislation to prevent this stuff from happening, but doing it in a half-assed way that just hurts everyone. wolfriverjoe 1,523 #6 December 31, 2017 Iago***I would also like to see the cops stop assuming everyone they confront is a cop killer. Comply or die needs to end. In this case I have to give the police benefit of the doubt. They were operating on jnfo from a 911 call that appeared to be from that area. As far as the discharge that caused the fatality, I haven't seen video so I can't comment. I have seen tapes where people were shot in there front yards hands held high and empty when the official reports mention threats and knives. No. They shot and killed an unarmed man. Who was doing nothing wrong. Standing on his own front porch, being confronted by the police for no reason that he knew of. I understand the cop mentality that they are responding to a call with a report of a man who has already shot someone. But they really have to end the 'comply or die' mentality that is getting a lot of innocent and unarmed people shot. And, referencing a post a couple up, this wouldn't be 2nd degree murder. That would require "intent to kill". 2nd is also rarely a capital offense. Possibly reckless or negligent manslaughter. 'Reckless' is knew it could or would be fatal, 'Negligent' is should have known that is could or would be fatal. I don't know what charges are going to be filed, but I hope they are rather severe."There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." The info from the call definitely indicates extreme caution on arrival, but what effort did they make after that to verify that any of it was even true? Did they ask anything about what was going on inside? When you start asking questions about "is your little brother and mother still in the closet?" you're going to get a confused "suspect" since there is no brother there. He said on the call he'd spread gasoline everywhere and was thinking about lighting it, wouldn't the place reek when the cops got there? I know there's no video yet, but it looks on the surface that there's still a major training issue here that contributed to the outcome. You are playing chicken with a planet - you can't dodge and planets don't blink. No, there is video, but the cops are so far away that you can't see much. Still doesn't show much of what led up to that sadly, would be useful to see if there was any effort to deescalate prior or if it was just "HANDS UP, WALK FORWARD, *BANG*".You are playing chicken with a planet - you can't dodge and planets don't blink.
