airdvr 210 #1 November 19, 2018 California's Deadliest Fires Could Have Been Mitigated By Prevention QuoteDuring this summer’s fires, outgoing California Governor Jerry Brown blamed the record-breaking fires on climate change. In a press conference he warned that the level of climate change-induced forest fires predicted in 20 to 30 years were “now occurring in real time.” While the frequency of fire has declined, the area burnt and the cost to fight wildfires have increased. Understanding why this is the case is the critical component in crafting a public policy solution to address the issue of deadly forest fires. QuoteThe federal government controls 46 percent of California’s land, much of it managed by the U.S. Forest Service. In the three decades before 1990, foresters harvested 10-12 billion board feet of timber from national forests every year. By 2013, restrictive environmental policies cut that to 2.5 billion. billvon 3,070 #4 November 19, 2018 >I have to wonder where those policies originated. Perhaps there is a clue in the fact that it started on federally managed land. But in any case, we now know definitely what caused the fire. It was federal land managers not raking the forests like they do in Finland. So once they get on the ball and start spending "a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things" then the problem will go away.

jakee 1,563 #11 November 20, 2018 DanGMaybe we can get immigrants from Finland to do it. They might be less offensive to Trump. The more you think about it, the more amazing the idea becomes that Trump thought Finland has fewer forest fires because they clear their forests better. Is it the fact that even southern Finland is 1500 miles further north than Sacramento that makes it so good? Is it that the average annual temperature of the central region is 20C colder? Is it that much of Finland's forests are under snow for 7 months of the year while much of California's wildfire areas have more summer sunshine hours than almost anywhere else in the world? Maybe it's that most of the space in Finland that isn't forest is either lake or bog instead of arid grassland, or maybe the idea that a country of 5.5M people could ever effectively manage fire suppression over 100,000sq miles of forest in the first place. Put it all together and it might just be my favourite thing he's ever said.Do you want to have an ideagasm?
