countzero 7 #1 June 14, 2006 i've seen tons of posts on downsizing but can't seem to find an answer to this-- what kind of winds should someone jump in when jumping a downsize canopy for the first time?diamonds are a dawgs best friend
AFFI 0 #2 June 14, 2006 Talk to your instructors, they can guide you better because they are familar with your progress. Having 9 jumps you probably already know the answer to this question. When flying a smaller canopy will it be flying faster or slower then the canopy your downsizing from? Now take that equasition and add the same question for what you already know about winds. Will a 10 mile perhour wind offer a slower of faster ground speed (when facing into the wind) then a 0 MPH?
quade 4 #3 June 14, 2006 I ain't your instructor and I've never seen you land, but . . . If you wouldn't be comfortable landing the downsized canopy in -ANY- normal condition, including a slight downwind and off-field, then maybe you should rethink your decision to downsize.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Yep good advice there, same that I got from my instructors. I downsized during the winter when the air density was high and there was typically a slight breeze. But, thats a California valley winter. AFFI 0 #6 June 14, 2006 Okay, I tried frying bacon nekkid, good advice - the bacon took one look at me in the buff and shriveled up on the spot!
Andy_Copland 0 #7 June 15, 2006 My instructor said i would be fine downsizing the other day but i chose to do just one more on my big main, I was 95% sure i would be fine. It wasnt enough.1338 People aint made of nothin' but water and shit. Until morale improves, the beatings will continue.
riggerrob 643 #8 June 16, 2006 Wait until there is a steady 10 knot wind. Wait until you get some coaching from a local JM on the finer points of down-sizing.

grasshopper 0 #10 June 17, 2006 My vote is for no winds. That way, you won't find yourself turning low to try to land into the wind if things don't go as planned.________________________________________________________ Abbie drove me to Idaho and all I got was this lousy sigline
